Barron's Accounting Handbook, 5th Edition, Joel G. Siegel Ph.D.

The newly updated edition of this authoritative reference volume deserves a place in the library of every accountant, bookkeeper, accounting manager, CPA, CFO, controller, business manager, and business student. An opening overview of financial accounting describes financial statements and presents details on financial reporting requirements and compliance, and USA GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards).

Chapters that follow cover cost management, as well as taxation forms and their preparation. An extensive A-to-Z dictionary of accounting terms presents short-entry definitions of everything from Abacus and Absorption Costing to Zero-Base Budgeting and Z Score. The book's concluding chapters cover information technology in accounting, quantitative methods for accounting, auditing, personal financial planning, governmental and nonprofit accounting, international accounting, and forensic accounting. Appendices cover recent accounting-related legislation, financial reporting differences among different countries, and more.

As a current Accounting major, this book is proving to be a valuable supplement to my textbooks.

Not really sure what the difference is between this fifth edition and the fourth edition, so if you just want a good reference book maybe just go with the fourth edition for half the price new.

Also, this book is fairly thick and if you plan on throwing it in your backpack to take to class, you might want to get the smaller dictionary of accounting terms from barron's. The smaller version costs about $4 on amazon and is much more travel friendly.

Overall, this is a good reference book for the house, a little bulky to carry with you. This book is not a text designed to teach you new concepts the way a class would. It is a reference to refresh your knowledge of a subject. There were some negative reviews on the old version that is does not go into depth on any subject, which is true. It is a reference book. It is akin to someone wondering why a physicians desk reference does not tell them how to perform surgery.

DR Siegle was my professor in Queens college and he was an excellent professor. I am not disapointed in purchasing this book. This book is an excellent reference book, it answers almost any question you might encounter in your accounting work.

I purchased this item for myself to keep abreast with some of the changes and as a help guide. It is a wealth of knowledge for a reasonable price.
