Financial Accounting, 8th Edition, Jerry J. Weygandt

Weygandt's Financial Accounting, 8th Edition, builds upon previous issues by offering a more in-depth introduction to financial accounting with a continued focus on relevant examples based on everyday life.

The goal is to help readers further understand the fundamental concepts necessary to use accounting effectively today, as well as an introduction to IFRS and how to use accounting in the future. Kimmel, Weygandt and Kieso present real financial statements and establish how a financial statement communicates the financing, investing, and operating activities of a business to users of accounting information.

Brand new and way cheaper than buying it from my university's bookstore!!! I saved over 50 dollars. Pretty good book for accounting, but it did lack the answers to the problems in the back. That would have been helpful when trying to correct your homework.

I appreciate how student-friendly the text is. It provides theory, examples with running explanations, and plenty of examples to do on your own (though without a way to "check" your work). I did buy the Kindle version and must state that the only glaring flop here is that you cannot print, even a single page.

I contacted Wiley & Amazon directly about this and Wiley points to Amazon, and Amazon says it's something to "consider" which means for having purchased a very expensive ebook you loose the ability to do what you could do by means of photocopy if you had the print version.

Computer Accounting with QuickBooks 2013, 15th Edition, Donna Kay

Using a hands-on approach, Computer Accounting with QuickBooks® 2013 integrates understanding accounting with mastery of QuickBooks software. The text provides proven instructional techniques based throughout the new edition to make students mastery of QuickBooks as effortless as possible. The Fifteenth Edition offers a complete package to learn the leading small business accounting software: QuickBooks software, comprehensive text, Student Blog, and LIVE Projects. The text uses a highly effective three-step approach to streamline your learning:

1. Chapter Tutorials. Providing numerous screen shots and detailed instructions, chapters in Computer Accounting with QuickBooks are designed as tutorials for the student to initially learn the accounting software features. All chapters are based on realistic, virtual company cases to enhance your understanding of the business environment in which QuickBooks is used. YouTube videos @ www.myquickbooks.me reinforce chapter tutorials.

2. Learning Activities. To improve long-term retention of student software skills and mastery of QuickBooks, learning activities are included at the end of the chapters. Designed with fewer instructions to test the understanding and, when needed, to develop skills at quickly seeking out additional information to complete tasks, the activities consist of exercises, projects and web quests. JIT Learning, the ability to seek out information as needed, is an increasingly important skill in a rapidly changing business environment. Computer Accounting with QuickBooks is designed to seamlessly facilitate your development of this crucial skill. In addition, the virtual cases challenge you to apply and develop both software and problem-solving skills.

3. Reflection. Reflection improves learning and retention. A reflection exercise, A Wish and A Star, appears at the end of each chapter to highlight what the student has learned.

New with QuickBooks 2013, we are pleased to include a Quick Guide in Section 3 to streamline your review for the QuickBooks User Certification examination.

Auditing and Assurance Services with ACL Software CD, 15th Edition, Alvin A Arens

Directed primarily toward Accounting college/university majors, this text also provides practical content to current and aspiring industry professionals.

Auditing and Assurance Services: An Integrated Approach presents an integrated concepts approach that shows readers the auditing process from start to finish. This text prepares readers for real-world audit decision making by using illustrative examples of key audit decisions, with an emphasis on audit planning, risk assessment processes and collecting and evaluating evidence in response to risks.

I really like this Kindle version for this book, but price reduce from $178 to $135 in 5 days after I bought.

The book itself is exactly what I needed for my class and it was in great shape when it got here. The only problem is there's no access card for Pearson's MyAccountingLab. That access by itself is $100 on the Pearson website. The reason I'm sticking with 3 stars instead of 1 (because I was tempted to put only 1) is Amazon's customer service.

When I got the first book I thought there was a mistake, maybe they accidently left out the access card. I contacted customer service and they sent me a replacement book over night. The new book also doesn't have the access card so I contacted customer service again for a refund. I'm just going to get it directly from the school.

Cost Accounting Plus NEW MyAccountingLab with Pearson eText -- Access Card Package, 14th Edition, Charles T. Horngren

The text that defined the cost accounting market.

Horngren’s Cost Accounting defined the cost accounting market and continues to innovate today by consistently integrating the most current practice and theory into the text. This acclaimed, market-leading text emphasizes the basic theme of “different costs for different purposes,” and reaches beyond cost accounting procedures to consider concepts, analyses, and management.

The product showed up on time (quickly), neat and tidy (wrapped in a cellophane). The price was well below other prices that I found out there. The loose leaf pages work well for me because I am able to take out just the chapters that I am studying or for that test unit. Accounting books these days seem to be so big and heavy and if you have multiple classes in a day it is not feasible to carry around full books for each. Searching by the ISBN is particularly easy on Amazon to find exactly what the professor required.

I just put the whole book together in a big binder and then after a test and so we are ready to move on to the next group of chapters, I take the next group out and transfer them to my smaller/current binder. It makes the material seem more manageable plus it was a great cost savings to buy the looseleaf.

This book was well written. The additional online my accounting lab was a godsend. I received a 3.9 in the class, and it is due to this book. Easy to understand explanations. And the online additional help should definitely not be overlooked. It will give you a sure advantage. Wonderful!

Accounting: Tools for Business Decision Making, 5th Edition, Jerry J. Weygandt

With this 5th edition, readers will acquire a practical set of tools and the confidence they need to use them effectively in making business decisions. The authors follow a "macro- to micro-" strategy by starting with a discussion of real financial statements first, rather than starting with the Accounting Cycle. The objective is to establish how a financial statement communicates the financing, investing, and operating activities of a business to users of accounting information.

This motivates readers by grounding the discussion in the real world, showing them the relevance of the topics covered to their careers. New content features such as a fresh and focused approach to Excel, “People, Profit, Planet”, a revised continuing managerial case, and new managerial accounting videos will also engage students and differentiate Kimmel Accounting 5e from the prior edition.

I really love this text and wish I had found it when I first started studying accounting. The book has excellent coverage of financial statements and some of the material that usually gives accounting newbies the hardest time. I feel even a baby can understand accounting the way that this book teaches it.

The book's coverage of accounting fundamentals is comprehensive and I will highly recommend it for first year accounting students or students who haven't had more than a year of accounting.

I can't say I love this book, but it gets the job done in explaining accounting. The one complaint I have is that some of the homework problems have "work backwards" and other things for which there are no examples in the chapters. Other than that I would recommend this book--the explanations it does contain are pretty easy to understand.

A well-designed, informative accounting book that explains the "how" of business transactions affect the company's financial standing using "real world" transactions. As a non-accountant, the traditional accounting cycle is gone from view. Instead, focus is made on the actual business transactions that are generated and their impact. It also discusses the journal entries needed to fix a mistake.

I purchased this book as part of required course material. Amazon had the best price!!! Very easy to use and read. The enclosed "Connect Plus" card was/is awesome! Gives you access to a special website that allows you to do homework online. Very user friendly. It's amazing what the Connect Plus site does.

This was a required text book for my managerial accounting class. The text introduces the student to cost accounting and how its implementation is used within businesses for internal decision making, performance evaluation, and costing bases. The text does an admirable job at differentiating the concepts covered in the text with financial reporting concepts in general accounting texts.

Financial Accounting, 2nd Edition, Don Herrmann

David Spiceland, Wayne Thomas and Don Herrmann have developed a unique text based on over 50 collective years of experience in the classroom. They’ve brought together best practices like highlighting Common Mistakes, offering frequent Let’s Review exercises, integrating the course with a running Continuing Problem, demonstrating the relevance of the course to non-majors with a Career Corner, and communicating it all in a student-friendly Conversational Writing Style.

The new 2nd edition of Financial Accounting, Spiceland, Thomas, Herrmann, has been developed with feedback from over 330 reviewers and focus group participants from across the country. The following list of changes and improvements is a testament to the many hours that reviewers spent analyzing the 1st edition, helping make Financial Accounting, 2nd edition, the best book of its kind.

About the Author J. David Spiceland received his MBA at Southern Illinois University and his Ph.D. at University of Arkansas. Dr. Spiceland has been recognized for his teaching, and is active in the AAA.

Wayne Thomas is the John T. Steed Chair in Accounting at the University of Oklahoma, where he teaches Introductory Financial Accounting to nearly 600 students per year. He received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and his master’s and PhD in accounting from Oklahoma State University.

Don Herrmann is the Arthur Andersen Professor of Accounting at Oklahoma State University where he teaches financial accounting, intermediate accounting, and a doctoral-level course in financial accounting research. He received his bachelor’s degree in business from John Brown University, his master’s degree in accounting from Kansas State University, and his PhD in accounting from Oklahoma State University.

This was a very good introduction, in my opinion, to financial accounting; I don't feel as if I didn't learn anything, on the contrary, it was very educational. It applies a conversational tone and a great deal of practice problems after each chapter. It was a little on the expensive side for me, but I have to admit I am very pleased with my purchase.

Dr. David Spiceland and company do a great job explaining Financial Accounting to first time student of accounting. The books is very self-explanatory and easy to follow. The examples really help explaining tough topics and I really liked the little paragraphs that explain the common mistakes students make because it saves you time and effort by avoiding common errors. One thing I will say is sometimes the text can become a little dry, but if you are actively reading it is not too bad.

I really recommend this book for anyone who is beginning accounting. Also, the Connect Plus is nice because it gives you homework to reinforce the material. Also, something great about the Connect Plus is the help button it gives you on homework it brings up an online copy of the book and takes you to the section and page the question relates to.

Intermediate Accounting with Annual Report, 7th Edition, J. David Spiceland

Financial accounting is undergoing a period of unprecedented change. The FASB and IASB have been working together to issue converged accounting standards that will dramatically change key reporting areas, and more generally have sought to converge accounting standards over time. In late 2011, the SEC will announce its decision on whether large public companies in the U.S. will be able to choose whether to report under U.S. GAAP or IFRS or if all companies are anticipated to be reporting under IFRS in the near future. So, while there currently is considerable overlap between U.S. GAAP and IFRS, and that overlap is increasing as convergence continues, important differences remain. To help instructors deal with the challenging environment, the Spiceland team is committed to providing current, comprehensive and clear coverage of intermediate accounting. The 7th edition reflects this commitment with the following innovations.

J. David Spiceland received his MBA at Southern Illinois University and his Ph.D. at University of Arkansas. Dr. Spiceland has been recognized for his teaching, and is active in the AAA.

Jim Sepe received his MBA at the University of California—Berkeley and his Ph.D. at the University of Washington. He has received numerous teaching awards at Santa Clara University.

Mark Nelson is the Eleanora and George Landew Professor of Accounting at Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, where he has been teaching Intermediate Accounting at the MBA level out of Spiceland's Intermediate Accounting for several years. He received his BBA degree from Iowa State University and his MA and PhD degrees from Ohio State University.

This is an excellent textbook for learning IA 1 & 2, as it is typically split by universities. I have used this textbook to teach myself IA1 and am using it for IA2, as I take these courses online without any benefit of notes or a lecture from a professor. There are comprehensive examples, well-thought out explanations of details, acknowledgement of some inconsistencies in GAAP accounting practices, and information regarding potential changes being instituted by FASB and the path toward convergence with IFRS. In addition, the online Connect teaching tool, through the McGraw-Hill website, is really very good. You get really good practice with necessary calculations and setting up journal entries.

It is a massive book and at the end you're going to look at it and be shocked that you actually read the whole thing, but it will teach you so much. I typically rent my textbooks, but I bought this one, despite the cost, because I know that I will be referring to it frequently throughout my accounting classes and as I prepare to take the CPA exam. Can't go wrong with the Spiceland textbook.

Accounting Information Systems, 12th Edition, Marshall B. Romney

The most comprehensive and flexible coverage of AIS.

The market-leading book that delivers the most comprehensive and flexible coverage of the four major approaches to teaching AIS. Accounting Information Systems also allows instructors to easily reorder chapters and focus the material to suit their course.

The twelfth edition covers all recent developments in AIS and how it has changed the roles of an accountant.

For a book on Information Systems, I would have expected the examples on accounting functions to be more up-to-date with current business practices rather than the archaic processes that were included.

Unfortunately, my instructor taught "by the book" and I was forced to relearn all the old ways of doing things such as forgoing using a lockbox for receiving cash and having two people in the mail room open the checks and manually write a deposit slip. Who has time for that?

Have the authors of this book not heard of process improvement, automation, Six Sigma? Trust me, the companies out there certainly have and that's what employees' success is judged against.

Teaching college students who have never worked in an Accounting Dept a process that hasn't been used in years is doing them a disservice. The Universities should expect current version textbooks to actually be updated with current business practices and then teach current business practices. Challenge themselves to actually produce graduates who won't feel behind the curve when they're out looking for a job up against those who have work experience. Put them ahead of the curve by teaching them Best Practice for their field. What a concept. It starts with truly up-to-date textbooks.

Financial Accounting, 7th Edition, Robert Libby

Libby/Libby/Short wrote this text based on their belief that the subject of financial accounting is inherently interesting, but financial accounting textbooks are often not. They believe most financial accounting textbooks fail to demonstrate that accounting is an exciting field of study and one that is important to future careers in business. When writing this text, they considered career relevance as their guide when selecting material, and the need to engage the student as their guide to style, pedagogy, and design.

Libby/Libby/Short is the only financial accounting text to successfully implement a real-world, single focus company approach in every chapter. Students and instructors have responded very favorably to the use of focus companies and the real-world financial statements. The companies chosen are engaging and the decision-making focus shows the relevance of financial accounting regardless of whether or not the student has chosen to major in accounting.

Robert Libby is the David A. Thomas Professor of Management at the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, where he teaches the introductory financial accounting course. He previously taught at the University of Illinois, Pennsylvania State University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Chicago, and University of Michigan. He received his B.S. from Pennsylvania State University and his M.A.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois; he is also a CPA. Bob is a widely published author specializing in behavioral accounting. He was selected as the AAA Outstanding Educator in 2000. His prior text, Accounting and Human Information Processing (Prentice Hall, 1981), was awarded the AICPA/AAA Notable Contributions to the Accounting Literature Award. He received this award again in 1996 for a paper. He has published numerous articles in the Journal of Accounting Research; Accounting, Organizations, and Society; and other accounting journals. He is past Vice President-Publications of the American Accounting Association and is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the editorial boards of The Accounting Review; Accounting, Organizations, and Society; Journal of Accounting Literature; and Journal of Behavioral Decision Making.

Patricia Libby is Chair of the Department of Accounting and Associate Professor of Accounting at Ithaca College, where she teaches the undergraduate financial accounting course. She previously taught graduate and undergraduate financial accounting at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Texas. Before entering academe, she was an auditor with Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) and a financial administrator at the University of Chicago. She received her B.S. from Pennsylvania State University, her M.B.A. from DePaul University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan; she is also a CPA. Pat conducts research on using cases in the introductory course and other parts of the accounting curriculum. She has published articles in The Accounting Review, Issues in Accounting Education, and The Michigan CPA. She has also conducted seminars nation-wide on active learning strategies, including cooperative learning methods.

Dan Short is the Dean of the M.J. Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX. Prior to that he was Dean at Richard T. Farmer School of Business at Miami University and Dean of the Business School at Kansas State University. Before entering adminstration, Dan taught at the University of Texas-Austin and the University of Chicago. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He has won numerous teaching awards during his career teaching both undergraduate and MBA financial accounting courses.

Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis, 14th Edition, Charles T. Horngren

I used this for a managerial course this past summer. First of all, this book is overpriced. Secondly, it is very dry, uninteresting, and a pain to read. The 13th edition covers the same material but the sneaky publishers changed up the numbers in the HW so you can't exactly use the 13th edition if the professor is assigning HW from the 14th. I think this is unethical and I think charging what they do for books like this should be a crime. Other than the HW, both editions cover the same material.

According to my professor and TA, this is an excellent book for managerial accounting. As a student, I am telling you that this book will frustrate you and make you angry because it is needlessly complicated. This is also compounded if you have poor instructors (like I had).

This is not a book you can use to teach yourself. You must go to class if you are using this book. After the first two chapters, the rest of the book will seem like a foreign language to you because it is all formula-based. Some people think that accounting is just adding and subtracting numbers; this book will dispel that myth by chapter three. The only way you are going to pass a class with this book is if you have talented professors or if you get yourself some tutoring. For example, in practice, the concept of ABC costing makes sense and I could probably explain it to you using some real world examples like manufacturing an iPhone or a similar popular product. This book takes ABC costing and it just makes it hard because it doesn't use real world examples and it does not take the extra step of simplifying the steps for you or giving you the bigger picture.

Each homework problem takes almost a half hour to complete and some of them are pretty hard. There are no answers in the back so you can't check your work. Also the language is not engaging at all and it is very dry and pedantic. Some books make a point and then explain it in a way that makes it easy for the student to understand. With this book, the author makes a point and then that's it; you have to figure out what it all means. I read chapter four for the first time and at the end I had no idea what I just read. Its like my brain took a break for the hour. The material is also sequential so if you are lost at chapter three, then you are lost for the rest of the book.

If your professor is using this book then there is not much you can do to get around it. I suggest you buy a used, old edition of some other managerial text to supplement this book. Another book might explain a concept much more clearly than this book and using both texts together might be better than using this one alone. I also still highly recommend you get a tutor or go to office hours while taking this class. In the end you will either do really well or really poorly. I don't think you can do average work in this class as the material is very "black and white"...kinda like a math class. Also, the Myaccountinglab problems take forever and have around 10 parts to each question so plan your time accordingly if your professor makes you use Myaccountinglab.

I only gave the book two stars because it is supposed to be a good book. Other than that, I think it makes managerial/cost accounting harder than it should be. If you find a section of a class that is not using this book...take that class and then worry about a real cost accounting course later. If your school is using this book for managerial accounting and you are not even an accounting major, then you are just setting yourself up for some unneeded stress as this is, for all intents and purposes, a cost accounting text and cost accounting is one of the hardest classes taken by accounting majors. Even if you are an accounting major, I think you need a real managerial course before you tackle cost. Financial and managerial accounting are not similar so diving right into this book without a real managerial accounting course is kinda stupid IMO.

I have no idea why a school would want to use this book as a managerial text. We used this text in managerial up till about chapter 11 and then chapter 23. We are currently using this same text in my cost accounting class and we started at ABC costing in chapter 5.

Every professor at my school who is familiar with this book agrees that it is "challenging." On the positive side, if you take your time and discipline yourself to do the work, you might actually enjoy the challenge of the text but if you are juggling several courses and you can't devote all of your time to this one class, then this book will be challenging.

My advice is for you is to give this class more time than you would another class. After chapter two, this book is like a runaway train so work hard and don't fall behind.

I took an accounting class last year and shamefully failed! I just could not understand the basic concepts to get from chapter to chapter. College Accounting classes for some reason expect you to have some basic understanding but I didn't and I'm sure there are many like me. So I bought this and other book to see if it would help. So far this is the only book that I understand. And everything seems to make sense to me now. I would recommend this book to anyone who's planning on taking an accounting course for the first time. I plan on retaking the class and now I feel confident going back in. THANK YOU MR.PIPER!!!

This book gives you a quick tour of the ins and outs of accounting. Great introduction on the basics and keeps it simple. Short enough to be read in a day. I highly recommend this to any one looking for a crash course in accounting.

I bought this book because I needed a review of accounting for my business. It does what it claims -- explains accounting in just a few hours. Well written and easy to understand.

I have always been a zealous organizer, whether setting up software demos, cooking gourmet meals, or scheduling a vacation to test the waters of spontaneity. Ironically, fate, not planning, turned this obsession into a career as a project manager. I write about project management, small business accounting, personal finance, investing, and technology -- and with the publication of my comedic crime novel, Fresh Squeezed, hit men and stupid criminals. I'm fascinated by how things work and how to make things work better. I hate reading dry-as-dust books about anything, especially project management and finance, so I try to spice up my writing with my warped sense of humor.

I've written more than two dozen books including QuickBooks 2013: The Missing Manual (now Intuit's Official Guide to QuickBooks), Project 2010: The Missing Manual, Successful Project Management (winner of an International Award from the Society of Technical Communication), Your Project Management Coach, the Better Investing Stock Selection Handbook (Winner of a Distinguished Award from the Society of Technical Communication and a Grand Award from APEX), and Online Investing Hacks. The novel, Fresh Squeezed, is now available in print and ebook.

I have recorded several popular courses for Lynda.com including QuickBooks Essentials, Project Essentials, Project Management Fundamentals, and Managing Small Projects (to be released Q4 2012). I'm working on several more.
