This is required reading for one of my MSA courses. It is very well written and easy to read. The cases, while dated, are still pertinent and thought provoking.

The book I received was used while the listing said it was new. I wrote to Zillionbooks' customer service and they immediately gave me a refund and discount with apologies. The most important thing was that they did answer to my request promptly. Very professional people. Will buy again if they have the book I need.

This is one of the best purchases I have ever made from Amazon. The book arrived on time and the price was right. It was new and in the state described in the advertisement. I would recommend the seller to any of my friends and I will continue to buy from them.

Cost Management: Measuring, Monitoring, and Motivating Performance, 2nd Edition, Leslie G. Eldenburg

Cost accounting has become an increasingly important tool for managers and accountants alike. The second edition helps them achieve professional success by bridging the gaps between knowledge, skills and abilities. It has been revised to focus on decision-making while still examining the procedural detail. It also emphasizes the analysis and application of concepts. Additional examples and illustrations draw comparisons between government and manufacturing. Real-world scenarios and ethical decision-making sections demonstrate how the material is applied. Accountants and managers will also view Excel spreadsheets to give them a better understanding of the material. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover
"Cost Management" was written in response to changes in the global business environment. Unbridled access to information and intense competition has meant that cost accounting has become an increasingly important tool for managers and accountants alike. Most textbooks focus on content knowledge and then expect students to 'magically' demonstrate skills such as decision-making and critical thinking. "Cost Management" better prepares students for professional success by bridging the gaps between Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. Many students fail to recognize the assumptions, limitations, behavioral implications and qualitative factors that influence managerial decision-making. The dynamic, new author team focuses on cost accounting methods, techniques and the quality of cost accounting information used for decision-making to deliver a thoroughly modern treatment of cost accounting topics.

The textbook is written in a style that is accessible to students and proactive about addressing the challenges that instructors and students face in their teaching and learning endeavors by utilizing features such as a decision-making framework, realistic examples, guide your learning boxes, real ethical dilemmas, self-study problems and unique problem material structured to encourage students to think about accounting problems and problem-solving more complexly. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

I used this book for my Financial Accounting I course I took this past Spring working towards my Bachelors degree. This was in the first accounting course and I really didn't know too much about accounting beforehand. While the book overall is a good text and full of helpful information and examples, the first chapter or two were totally useless because they approached accounting pragmatically and tried to cover too many fundamentals too soon. Accounting is not an easy subject and theres no easy way to get started with it.

However, my professor (who had used the book before) skipped over the first couple chapters and taught us the fundamentals using her own method which did work very well and then the rest of the book made more sense. At times it seems the book might cover a topic or circumstance in only one or two sentences and then will have a problem or two that deal more extensively with that short concept. The only reason I could think they did this was to stimulate creativity and learning and force the student to figure out how to mold the various principles to fit a particular "new" situation rather than just have you memorize some rules. Some might not like this method.

I started out with practically no knowledge of accounting - this book did a very impressive job of introducing me to the various concepts. I can now read and understand the financial statements put out by the companies. Our professor used this book very extensively - he would talk about a topic and then point out the page numbers where the authors had written about that topic. This is a pretty good reference too - I have refered to the book many times when I see certain accounting terms used in the press. The authors have kept the explanation very concise and have inserted examples that capture the essence of the explanation. I found the book to be very expensive though.

Good service. The customer service was great. The book was well written and provided a great deal of information. Had a few good parts for the toolbox.

Introduction to Financial Accounting, 10th Edition, Charles T. Horngren

Introduction to Financial Accounting describes the most widely accepted accounting theory and practice with an emphasis on using and analyzing the information in financial statements. This text also compares U.S. GAAP to IFRS where relevant. Accounting: The Language of Business; Measuring Income to Assess Performance; Recording Transactions; Accrual Accounting and Financial Statements; Statement of Cash Flows; Accounting for Sales; Inventories and Cost of Goods Sold; Long-Lived Assets and Depreciation; Liabilities and Interest; Stockholders’ Equity; Intercorporate Investments and Consolidations; Financial Statement Analysis For financial accountants.

My review is based on the 9th edition. The book does provide the basic ideas about financial accounting. However, it is not very good for self-study. There are some cons about this book that prevent me from giving it more stars :

(1) No answers/no solutions to any of the end-of-chapter problems. So, you cannot test yourself and see if you understood the concepts properly. There is no students solutions manual for this book. If you are lucky, you can get an instructors manual from your instructor.

(2) Not enough sample problems in each chapter. Generally, 2-4 problems only. Not enough, considering point (1).

(3) At some places, the author uses uncommon words and verbose passages to explain concepts. They confused me sometimes.

(4) It does not mention how some accounting ratios are used in the real world and whether one must make decisions based mainly on a lot of ratios.

It is difficult to understand and appreciate the basics of accounting by reading only this book.

An alternative to this book is Financial Accounting by Libby. It uses a lot of pictures to illustrate concepts, which this book does not. Again, libby's book has no answers in the end, but its contents are presented in a better way.

Full of examples and is very thorough. Includes real statements while taking things a step a time to fully comprehend financial accounting.

Wiley GAAP 2013: Interpretation and Application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (Wiley GAAP: Interpretation & Application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), 11th Edition, Joanne Flood

Wiley GAAP 2013 contains complete coverage of all levels of GAAP, indexed to the ASC. Wiley GAAP renders GAAP more understandable and accessible for research, and has been designed to reduce the amount of time and effort needed to solve accounting research issues. Providing interpretive guidance and a wealth of real-world, content-rich examples and illustrations, this invaluable guide offers clear, user-friendly guidance on every pronouncement including FASB Technical Bulletins, AcSEC Practice Bulletins, FASB Implementation Guides, AICPA Statements of Position, and AICPA Accounting Interpretations.

Offers insight into the application of complex financial reporting rules Contains detailed index for easy reference use Includes a comprehensive cross-reference of accounting topics to the FASB codification system With easy-to-access information, this reliable resource offers complete coverage of the entire GAAP hierarchy.

From the Back Cover
The most practical, authoritative guide to GAAP

Now including the latest Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) updates on comprehensive income, fair value, balance sheet offsetting, goodwill, and more, the Accounting Standards Codification™ (ASC) supersedes virtually all promulgated generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), replacing what had previously comprised four levels in the GAAP hierarchy with a single set of codified GAAP. The Codification has created a new, clearer indexing system that is much easier to access and use to research solutions to real-world financial reporting problems. Although the Codification does not itself change US GAAP, it has comprehensively reorganized the myriad of GAAP rules (FASB statements, AICPA statements of position, EITF consensuses, guidance from Audit and Accounting Guides, FASB staff positions, etc.) into a single, easy-to-use compendium conveniently organized by topic or subject.

Wiley GAAP 2013 contains, as did preceding editions, complete coverage of GAAP and, for ease of reference, is now arranged by ASC topics. Wiley GAAP renders GAAP more understandable and accessible for research, and has been designed to reduce the amount of time and effort needed to solve accounting research issues. As it has since its inception in 1985, Wiley GAAP provides interpretive guidance and a wealth of real-world, content-rich examples and illustrations to provide the type of insight into the application of complex financial reporting rules that traditional handbooks and their "plain vanilla" illustrations simply cannot offer.

Wiley GAAP 2013 is your one necessary authoritative guide to GAAP under the new codification system. This invaluable resource makes learning the new ASC system a breeze, with at-your-fingertips information that does the work for you. Practicable and reliable, Wiley GAAP 2013 is the essential tool to navigate these waters.

Great as a reference guide for any for profit organization and business entity, recommend it for executive directors and executive board members.

I advice the book to everybody. It is very useful and answer all my questions. Also I do not face any problem while receiving to book. It is on time.

As a graduate student, this is much easier than trying to look at the CRS to find applicable GAAP. I also love the explanations. I will be buying Wiley GAAP 2014 when they are available.

Business Analysis and Valuation: Using Financial Statements, Text and Cases (with Thomson Analytics Printed Access Card), 5th Edition, Krishna G. Palepu

Financial statements are the basis for a wide range of business analysis. Managers, securities analysts, bankers, and consultants all use them to make business decisions. There is strong demand among business students for course materials that provide a framework for using financial statement data in a variety of business analysis and valuation contexts.

BUSINESS ANALYSIS & VALUATION: USING FINANCIAL STATEMENTS, TEXT & CASES, 5E allows you to undertake financial statement analysis using a four-part framework--(1) business strategy analysis for developing an understanding of a firm's competitive strategy; (2) accounting analysis for representing the firm's business economics and strategy in its financial statements, and for developing adjusted accounting measures of performance; (3) financial analysis for ratio analysis and cash flow measures of operating; and (4) prospective analysis. Then, you'll learn how to apply these tools in a variety of decision contexts, including securities analysis, credit analysis, corporate financing policies analysis, mergers and acquisitions analysis, and governance and communication analysis. This text also offers one Harvard case per chapter as well as an entirely separate section (Section 4) for additional cases!

In 1993-94 he served as Deputy Dean at the Sloan School, and in 1994-95 he visited London Business School and Harvard Business School. There are few differences between the 4th edition and this one- a few new cases being the major one. Other differences include harder-to-read line graphs (black and blue lines look almost identical- it seems as if they were trying to save money by using less colors, something further illustrated by the differences in the photographs on the covers of the respective editions: the 5th edition one looking rather monochromatic compared to the 4th), and a lack of questions at the end of the case studies. Page numbers between the 4th and 5th editions are almost identical, as is the information provided on those pages.

The operative question for a potential buyer- are additional cases on Vizio and iphone worth an extra $100? When I bought this book (5th Edition) Amazon actually had a picture of the 4th edition on this page, and the title on this webpage made no reference to the edition, so I am a little miffed about that, as the 4th edition would have worked just fine for my purposes.

The content of the chapters of the book is pretty good (4th and 5th edition), and relatively easy to understand, but non-accounting students taking a class using this book might want to get an intermediate accounting book as a supplemental text, as this book seems to assume a pretty good knowledge of accounting and financial statements.

Bottom line: unless you are hellbent on getting the new cases, get the 4th edition- both are extremely expensive, but the 4th edition, much less so.

EDIT: I feel I may have been a bit harsh above in some of my criticisms- there are actually a good bit of new cases, and another major change with the 5th edition is the additional information on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards). Even still, considering the price differences, the 4th edition its worthy of consideration.

Principles of Accounting, 12th Edition, Belverd E. Needles

Needles/Powers/Crosson PRINCIPLES OF ACCOUNTING is continuously evolving to meet the needs of today's learner. This edition's new structure is based on research with students about the best way to deliver content in this course! The chapters in Needles/Powers/Crosson have been organized into the Three Section Approach, which helps you more easily digest the content. The first section is Concepts and focuses on the overarching accounting concepts that require consistent reiteration throughout the course. With a clear understanding of the concepts, you are then ready to experience the second section--Accounting Applications.

Here you practice the application of accounting procedures with features like "Apply It" and a new transaction analysis model, which clearly illustrates how transactions are the result of business decisions and recorded in a way to show their effects on the financial statements. Finally, you utilize section three, Business Applications. This section illustrates how the concepts and procedures are used to make business decisions. Real company examples are used throughout the chapter to show students the relevance of the material. This logical progression through the material is further supported in the online environment in CengageNOW with the Tri-Level Problem. This problem mirrors the Three Section Approach and connects the sections to facilitate a more complete understanding.
