E. R. Yescombe's practical guide to project finance offers a systematic approach to this relatively new discipline, which is now used throughout the world in energy, infrastructure, natural resources, and other projects. Because project finance dictates every aspect of a project's development and contractual arrangements, all participants need to understand how this type of financing works and how the financial structure affects their roles. This examination of financial engineering tools therefore follows the typical project development process to demonstrate the principles which underlie the structuring of long-term debt finance for major projects. The book is intended both as an introduction to project finance and a general working handbook for those involved in any aspect of a project.

Key Features:
-A comprehensive and authoritative guide to the theory and practice of project finance.
-An international scope, covering projects in both the developed and developing worlds.
-The book describes and explains:
-Sources of project finance.
-Typical commercial contracts (such as those for construction of the project and sale of its product or services) and their impact on the project finance structure.
-Project finance risk assessment from the points of view of lenders, investors, and other project parties.
-Structuring the project finance debt.
-The key issues in negotiating a project finance debt facility.
-Extensive glossary and cross-referencing.
-No prior knowledge of project finance or financing techniques is assumed.

The Professional's Guide to Fair Value: The Future of Financial Reporting (Wiley Corporate F&A), 1st Edition, James P. Catty

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1118004388/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1118004388&linkCode=as2&tag=bestaccounting-20

An all-encompassing guide to the elements and basics of fair value

With the important role fair value is playing in the creation of a converged set of global accounting standards, demand for products in this category is growing spectacularly. The elements and basics of fair value are covered, including risk, dealing with the SEC, and details on legal responsibility. In addition, sample financial statements are included, along with tables, recommended applicable techniques, and management checklists for those who are responsible for preparing and approving of financial statements.

-Written by the Chairman and co-CEO of the International Association of Consultants, Valuators and Analysts (IACVA\
-Includes sample financial statements of both U.S. and foreign companies

Appropriate for anyone involved professionally with finance—managers, accountants, investors, bankers, instructors, and students—The Professional's Guide to Fair Value is a reliable reference on the ins and outs of fair value financial disclosure.

This book provides an excellent discussion of "fair value," which is an accounting concept. The author makes a very clear explanation of the distinction between fair value and other types of value, such as "fair market value." The text and examples are well-written and help in understanding the author's points.

Another thing I like about this book is that it is relatively new - copyright in 2012 - so it includes many recent accounting pronouncements and the latest thinking on certain topics brought about after the 2008-2009 financial crisis. In some parts, the author does go into quite a bit of detail, which is helpful for more novice students. For more experienced readers, the most value, in my opinion, come from the conceptual chapters (i.e., first five chapters of the book). Overall, this is a very good book that should be helpful to readers of all levels.

Loose-Leaf Advanced Accounting, 11th Edition, Joe Ben Hoyle

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0077489381/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0077489381&linkCode=as2&tag=bestaccounting-20

The approach used by Hoyle, Schaefer, and Doupnik in the new edition allows students to think critically about accounting, just as they will do while preparing for the CPA exam and in their future careers. With this text, students gain a well-balanced appreciation of the Accounting profession.

As Hoyle 11e introduces them to the field’s many aspects, it often focuses on past controversies and present resolutions. The text continues to show the development of financial reporting as a product of intense and considered debate that continues today and into the future.

The writing style of the ten previous editions has been highly praised. Students easily comprehend chapter concepts because of the conversational tone used throughout the book.

The authors have made every effort to ensure that the writing style remains engaging, lively, and consistent which has made this text the market leading text in the Advanced Accounting market. The 11th edition includes an increase integration of IFRS as well as the updated accounting standards.

About the Author
Joe B. Hoyle is Associate Professor of Accounting at the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond, where he teaches Intermediate Accounting I and II and Advanced Accounting. He is currently the David Meade White Distinguished Teaching Fellow. He has been named a Distinguished Educator five times and Professor of the Year on two occasions. He is also author of Fast Track CPA Examination Review and coauthor of The Lakeside Company Case Studies in Auditing.

Thomas F. Schaefer is the KPMG Professor of Accounting at the University of Notre Dame. He has written a number of articles in scholarly journals such as The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting & Economics, Accounting Horizons, and others. His primary teaching and research interests are in financial accounting and reporting.

Tom is active with the International Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and is a past President of the American Accounting Association’s Accounting Program Leadership Group (APLG).

Timothy S. Doupnik is the Cramer Fellow in International Accounting at the University of South Carolina. He received his Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Illinois. Tim is a past president of the International Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association. He currently serves as an associate editor for the Journal of International Accounting Research and on the editorial board of several other international journals.

I regret buying this loose-leaf edition. No way to sell back, easy to have some pages lost. Should bought the hardcover edition. Much cheaper. I don't really care about the weight.

Corporate Divestitures: A Mergers and Acquisitions Best Practices Guide, 1st Edition, William J. Gole

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0470180005/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0470180005&linkCode=as2&tag=bestaccounting-20

Providing practical application of best practices employed in the divestiture process, Corporate Divestitures provides you with detailed guidance on how your corporation should handle a divestiture. It provides a structured approach that emphasizes disciplined execution and illustrative documents and application aids that can be adapted for use in real-world situations.

Almost any business person would rather do an acquisiton than a divestiture - making a no-nonsense business approach a must. This comprehensive guide takes you through all the steps. From the initial strategic discussion which centers on analytics instead of emotional political biases or 'sacred' company history; to the project management of the sale transaction; to the softer human issues (which are usually given inadequate analysis). If you are looking for a pragmatic guide to a process that can get emotionally charged - this is your book.

The best thing about the topic is the hands-on approach to the topic. Haven't seen anything like it in Merger and Acquisition literature. Two authors who clearly know their stuff.

I would definitely recommend this book if you are interested in expanding your knowledge of corporate divestitures. Much better than many M&A books I have read.

Detailed, comprehensive and nuanced: the info is presented in a variety of ways made easy for every type of reader. Each systematic analysis is accessible via key-point charts, procedural outlines, step charts, & schedule charts - as well as lucid text. I would not have expected sections on preparing a data room, selection & structuring of so many functional prep teams, how-to's on retention planning, post-deal process assessment, etc. Inspires total confidence. Referenced with a 7-page Index.

Judgment and Decision Making in Accounting, 1st Edition, Sarah E. Bonner

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0138638950/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0138638950&linkCode=as2&tag=bestaccounting-20

This unique first edition is the only book on the market that delivers a contemporary synthesis of both psychology and accounting literature related to judgment and decision making.

Judgment and Decision Making in Accounting is structured around an innovative framework that provides a unique way of thinking about JDM projects and organizing JDM research. Developed based on many years of teaching and research on accounting JDM, this unique framework succinctly describes the key issues in accounting JDM research, enabling readers to more quickly assimilate the vast material related to those issues. The framework also provides a basis to help readers evaluate their own current JDM research ideas, as well as generate further research questions.

If you are a PhD student in Accounting and your interests lie in Behavioral Research in Accounting, this text is a must read. Even if your interest lies in economic theory, this text will broaden your perspective on factors that are not considered in economic models.

This text is well-thought out and well written. Enjoy!

This book is an excellent overview of the major theories that impact accounting judgment and decision making. Too many people forget, or don't know, that accounting isn't made up of distinct rules with yes/no answers - there are many opportunities for financial results to be changed through a good/bad decision by an accountant.

The only thing that keeps this book from being four stars - it needs to be even longer and more detailed. This is an extremely relevant topic in today's world.

The Global Curse of the Federal Reserve: How Investors Can Survive and Profit From Monetary Chaos, 2nd Edition, Brendan Brown

The Global Curse of the Federal Reserve reveals and explores the missing link between the Austrian School of Economics and behavioral finance theory. Monetary instability is the source of the waves of irrational exuberance (sometimes described as "asset price inflation"), which spread so much economic destruction and geo-political turmoil when they break. The largest and most destructive waves in the past 100 years have all been powered by monetary turmoil created by the Federal Reserve. Dr. Brown argues that flawed monetary practice and principles—most recently in the form of Bernanke-ism—have been responsible for the Fed-made havoc.

The author comes to two optimistic conclusions. First, political forces in the US will one day gain sufficient strength to repeal Bernanke-ism. But the new revolutionaries must learn from the mistakes of the first monetarist revolution. Brown argues for the end of the Fed as a policy-making institution. Second, it is possible for investors to build substantial protection for their wealth and even profit from monetary chaos unleashed by the Federal Reserve—but this depends on throwing overboard much of the established wisdom about optimal portfolio management.

Review
"Since its founding, the Federal Reserve's oracles have cultivated and kept alive the myth that the world's most prominent central bank is a purveyor of domestic and international stability. Brendan Brown, a premiere market economist, draws on his deep knowledge of economics, history and markets to expose the Fed as a great destabilizing force. Brown shines a bright light on all the nonsensical ideas and arguments that have been peddled by Fed myth makers - both past and present. He scrutinizes and explodes ideas embraced by contemporary currency warriors, including the so-called global imbalance and savings glut problems, and, yes, inflation targeting. Once Brown disrobes the oracles, he then takes monetarism to a new level and unfurls a blueprint for monetary stability." - Steve H. Hanke, Professor of Applied Economics, The Johns Hopkins University, USA

About the Author
BRENDAN BROWN is an international economist practicing in London, UK. He has authored many books on international financial topics, including monetary problems in the US, Europe, and Japan, and asset market pricing (including exchange rates) in a global context. The books cover both contemporary trends and historical topics. He was awarded a PhD by the London School of Economics and an MBA by the University of Chicago. Dr. Brown is a regular contributor to Japanese and European financial media.

The book is very presents a very clear analysis of the problems created by central bank manipulation of the money supply. It provides an interesting history of the Fed's behavior and its consequences from its inception. If you are interested in the effect of central banking, and particularly the Fed, on an economy, you won't want to miss this book. If you liked Lords of Finance, Bankers Who Broke the World, you will like this book.

Next Generation Excel: Modeling in Excel for Analysts and MBAs (Wiley Finance), 1st Edition, Isaac Gottlieb

ext Generation Excel – Modeling in Excel for Analysts and MBAs is not just another "how to use Excel" book. The content of this book is the distillation of the feedback of many years of teaching, both in classrooms as well as corporate workshops settings. It is the author's conclusion that in studying applications, people do not want to read long complicated explanations. Therefore, this book is filled with short descriptions and multiple screenshots, to walk the reader through the different manipulations. Excel is a very powerful—and extensive—software program. The intricacies can seem overwhelming to the casual user. This book is the answer to simplifying what might seem complicated. Using a step-by-step, hands-on approach, it will help anyone using the program discover many functions and achieve immediate results, quickly making efficient use of the power of the Excel options.

Some of the subjects covered in the book include:

Financial functions
Data mining using Pivot Tables
Statistics for non-statisticians
Accounting
What-if analysis, and many more.

Each chapter is subject-specific and can be consulted independently from the others. By opening the book at any chapter, the reader will find valuable information for immediate efficiency improvement.

Neither a beginner’s introductory book, nor a power-user's manual, Next Generation Excel—using Excel 2007, with explanations pertaining to Excel 2003 and previous versions when needed—is designed to appeal to analysts, executives, students, daily users as well as instructors in the software. All the techniques described have been extensively tested with students and workshop participants.

Users at any level will benefit from the wealth of information within, easily and rapidly.

From the Back Cover
"Dr. Isaac Gottlieb personally trained 35 of our top analysts and finance professionals in a customized advanced Excel seminar. Many of the tools covered in this book were part of this well-received training. For the past five years, Isaac’s monthly Excel-Tip-Of-The-Month newsletter has been a personal favorite of mine. In an age where email overload is common, I always look forward to his email and many of my associates and team members around the world are part of his over 50,000 monthly recipients. This compilation is a must-have for any finance professional who wants to be a better business partner and truly add value in a more efficient manner!" Anthony N. Caspio, CMA Vice President - Finance Sealed Air Corporation "Excel has been one of the most powerful applications of recent times, but most users, unfortunately, only scratch its surface. Prof. Gottlieb’s book leverages his years of Excel workshops in the US, Europe and Asia, and he unleashes the tremendous potential and power of Excel. His to-the-point explanations and his innovative screenshots bring Excel alive to readers who may just have a working knowledge of the software. This amazing volume is an application-oriented book for Excel users who want answers fast, and who need to maximize the application’s awesome potential." Prof. Farrokh Langdana, Ph.D. Director, Rutgers Executive MBA Professor, Rutgers Business School

"If I should thank Microsoft for inventing Excel, then I would like to thank Dr. Isaac Gottlieb more for teaching me how to use it to solve the real problems in my real work. Keep going Isaac!" Wu Haowen Director of International Programs School of Management, Dalian University of Technology

"Isaac Gottlieb's Next Generation Excel is an invaluable resource. The fruit of many years of teaching Excel to university business students, Gottlieb’s book covers the topics that the Excel user needs to become more efficient and sophisticated. It is easy to read and follow. A wonderful book!" Simon Benninga Professor of Finance, Faculty of Management, Tel Aviv University Author of Principles of Finance with Excel

"As an avid user of Excel, several years ago I came across Isaac's Excel-Tip-Of-The-Month newsletter. I quickly realized that Isaac exploits Excel to the “next usability level.” Like his monthly newsletters, Isaac has composed a book that is clear and concise similarly reflecting his teaching methods. This book helps intermediate users to rapidly acquire Excel-pro skills, while allowing advanced users to grasp concepts in one single pass-through. Furthermore, Isaac takes day-to-day challenges and provides elegant ease of use solutions." Moshe Castiel Manager, IT – Technology & Operations TIAA-CREF

"Next Generation Excel presents an interesting perspective on the resourcefulness of Microsoft Excel like never before. This book is an excellent and a much-needed resource to MBA students, educators and Excel enthusiasts. In reviewing this book, the principal criteria included content, organization and Excel add-on files. The book is neatly organized into sections; starting with basic Excel tools and functions, commonly used statistical tools, what-if-analysis and then moving on to advanced data features, solver-add ins and various other ToolPaks, nicely complemented with the Excel snapshots to provide a user friendly experience. As a result, one can jump directly to the relevant sections and use the Excel files provided to get a more hands-on experience. The right mix of theory and practice, is the unique selling point (USP) of this book!" Anirudha "Andy" Vaidya, MBA CEO AVS System

The Auditor: An Instructional Novella, 1st Edition, James Loebbecke

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0130799769/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0130799769&linkCode=as2&tag=bestaccounting-20

This unique book reaches beyond the abstract theory presented in most standard textbooks to portray the principles and practices of Auditing as they are actually applied in the workplace. The novella—which forms a single, on-going, fictional case study meant to supplement a text—traces the professional life of Jack Butler, graduate of Farwestern University and current CPA As readers progress, they share with Jack, his clients, and colleagues various aspects of a typical career in public accounting—aspects students will most likely encounter during their own careers.

This is a nice resource for audit students or new auditors. I doubt it would be entertaining for most others. The book was written as an "instructional novella" for students and it offers some good information on public accounting audit careers.

The story follows the career of a fictional auditor in a large, fictional firm in Oakland, California. He goes through various typical experiences to give students insight into what public accounting and auditing is really like. This is the type of information that is hard for students to come by. The story follows the career of a star, and may create an overly optimistic impression of what an audit career might be like. But the author also throws in some of the negatives. The narrator is asked by both managers and clients to makes some questionable moves, and he and others suffer from the grind of being over-worked, and even outside of the expected busy season. He also points out that pay is not quite in balance with the level of work and responsibility.

I think this book would have been better if it didn't focus on a fast-rising star. The narrator made partner at age 32, after nine years, which seems pretty fast to me. The book does offer some good information and helps new auditors know some of what is coming, but I wouldn't expect most careers to follow this path. However, I would still recommend it for anyone who is considering a career in public accounting.

If you are reading this review, you probably have to buy The Auditor for a class like I did. It gives a somewhat accurate portrayal of auditing life for Jack in a large firm from his college choices to making partner. However, Jack comes across as almost perfect. The book describes his rise to partner and goes into several situations he faced along the way. Every time Jack came out looking like the perfect employee.

The book was written in the 90’s and needs to be updated for changes in technology and changes in women in public accounting. There are a few fairly sexist stories about how women are treated in public accounting. If you don’t have to buy it, don’t. Rent it or borrow it from a friend. Most paperbacks can be bought for $5-$15 and this one is way over-priced for what you get.

Customer service was very helpful. There was a problem in the manufacturing of the book (book was bound backwards).

Advanced Financial Accounting, 8th Edition, Richard Baker

The eighth edition of Advanced Financial Accounting is an up-to-date, comprehensive, and highly illustrated presentation of the accounting and reporting principles used in a variety of business entities. The new edition continues to provide strong coverage based on continuous case examples that tie all of the disparate details of Advanced Accounting together for the students. The text is highly illustrated with complete presentations of worksheets, schedules, and financial states so that students can see the development of each topic. Inclusion of all recent FASB and GASB pronouncements and the continuing deliberations of the authoritative bodies provide a current and contemporary text for students preparing for the CPA Exam and current practice. The book's building block approach introduces concepts with simple examples and then gradually introduces complexity, allowing students to easily keep pace with the material.

I have used this book in conjunction with Gleim's CPA review books in preparation for FARE section of the CPA exam. Excellent supplement especially if you look for technical aspects of purchase/pooling accounting. The chapters on consolidation are truly outstanding. Very thorough and comprehensive. The only drawback as with many other textbooks is the lack of answer keys at the end of the chapter. Overall, I would definitely recommend getting it.

I liked this textbook because it is nice and clean and uncluttered inside, however I think that the content could have been better. I had trouble with the first chapter having to do with business combinations in that every time a journal entry was recorded, I had no idea whether the author was referring to the common stock of the purchasing company or the common stock of the selling company. After a while, I finally figured it out, but I thought the problem could have been avoided by being more clear. There are many more examples that I have like this one. I may be being picky about the book seeing as how I took this course via independent study, so I did not have the ability to ask an instructor specific questions. I just think that the authors could have done a better job being more clear on many things. In the end, I did end up getting a A in the course!

This book covers special accounting entities that are not covered in Intermediate Accounting. This book has become helpful in the different organizations I have been employed. Although the material in this book is a lot - it is necessary. Has an excellent section for Not-for-Profit accounting.

I bought this book for school. The delivery was awesome. The price was great. I would recommend any college student to check out this site for cheap textbooks.

This is only the 3rd textbook I have ever ordered online and I was blown away! The binding was barely cracked, and not a highlight in it! I had to check my account to see if I was accidentally charged for a new book-but "this" was considered used. When they say very good condition they really mean it, and the price was fantastic. A million thank you's I will order from you guys anytime!

International Exploration Economics, Risk, and Contract Analysis, 1st Edition, Daniel Johnston

Text provides a practical perspective on international exploration economics and risk analysis, petroleum fiscal system analysis and design, contract negotiations; and economic, financial, and accounting aspects of production sharing contracts and royalty/tax systems. DLC: Petroleum industry and trade--Finance.

An absolute must-have book for all oil and gas executives, especially those involved in evaluating and running economics. Wished i had come across this book earlier, but it's still not too late and the book is an excellent reference to always have with you.

After reading the other reviews I found that they were not up to par. This book is a great reference book and a very helpful `go to' book for explanation of analytical approaches to some of the newest techniques in the industry. Excellent presentation. Everybody who does this kind of work, or hopes to, should have this book.

This book is really aimed for those with no understanding of the oil and gas business, particularly international economics. Contract analysis is by far an over statement with little to no discussion on PSA's.

I had great expectations about this book. Unfortunately for a beginner introductory book it lacks of clarity, for an expert book it lacks of depth. Nice glossary for beginners. The Contract summary at the end is excellent and makes for the cost of the book.

How to Become a Successful Financial Consultant is your complete guide to making it in today's fastest growing sector of the consulting market.

The author's background is a small town CPA, which may account for his no BS approach. Simple (not simplistic) straightforward solid advice for anyone wishing to start a financial advisory practice. I'm have a CPA background and obtained my CFP several years ago, but never practiced financial planning, other than a brief foray working with an insurance company, which was an excercise in high pressure selling. Ugh! I wish I had this book back then!

You're in mid-career and you're investigating a switch to the new industry of financial services. You know a few people in the industry but are looking for some good sources of comprehensive information. This is it. Jim Ainsworth lays it all out. If you want to know what to expect, this is it. Get the book, you won't regret it.

I read this book my senior year in college. I had known for a few years that I wanted to be a financial planner, but I had many unanswered questions. This book kept it simple and answered all the questions I had. This is a definite must read for anyone considering a career in financial planning. Hopefully I can use the wisdom in this book to establish a successful financial consulting practice. Thank you Mr. Ainsworth!

Principles of Accounting, 1st Edition, Meg Pollard

The Demo Docs System of instruction replicates the classroom experience by providing more “I get it” moments outside of class. We’ve talked to tons of POA instructors and our editors have even taken the accounting course (numerous times!) to figure out the following issue in this course that is consistent: Students understand (or “get it”) right after you do a problem in class, but as soon as they leave class, with each passing hour, their ability to do the problems again and complete their homework diminishes to the point of them either having to come to office hours to get help, or they just quit and get behind in the course. On top of this, you can end up getting behind in the course as well, in order to keep everyone on track. The Demo Docs system helps to recreate the “I get it” moments outside of class-- keeping both you and the students on track.

About the Author
Meg Pollard is a Professor of Accounting at American River College in Sacramento, California. She received her B.A. degree from UCLA in Economics-Business and her M.B.A. in Business Administration from California State University, Sacramento, graduating as the Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year with memberships in Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society.

Her industry experience has also included service as Director of Finance for a non-profit organization.

Pollard is a Certified Public Accountant with an Active License in California and is a member of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, CalCPA. She is listed in both “Who’s Who Among Executive and Professional Women Educators” and “Who’s Who Among Americas Teachers.”

Professor Pollard has taught Fundamentals of College Accounting, Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Intermediate Accounting, Payroll Accounting, Auditing, Computer Spreadsheet Applications for Accounting, Careers in Accounting, Concepts in Personal Finance, and Business Mathematics. She is co-founder and co-instructor of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at American River College, an Internal Revenue Service program in which student volunteers electronically prepare and file income tax returns for low-income individuals free of charge.

I ordered the book a week before my test and got it in three days, just enough time to study for my first test. That is some great service.

Financial Accounting: A Bridge to Decision Making, 6th Edition, Robert W. Ingram

Now in its sixth edition, Ingram, Albright, FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING: A BRIDGE TO DECISION MAKING continues to teach students to understand the impact of accounting information on a company's financial statements. The authors illustrate accounting not as a set of technical procedures, but as a way of identifying and understanding business problems and a means for evaluating alternative solutions. By organizing the text around the flow of information through a business, the authors provide students with a sound understanding of the accounting information system and then an analysis of the financial, investing and operating activities of the firm. This approach is especially ideal for students who will become business managers, not accountants.

About the Author
Robert W. Ingram is the Ross-Culverhouse Chair in the Culverhouse School of Accountancy at the University of Alabama. He teaches courses in financial accounting and has been actively involved in course curriculum development. He has served as Director of Education for the American Accounting Association, as a member of the Accounting Education Change Commission, and as editor of Issues in Accounting Education, a journal dedicated to accounting education research. Professor Ingram is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Ph.D. from Texas Tech University. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Alabama, he held positions at the University of South Carolina and the University of Iowa, and a visiting appointment at the University of Chicago.

His research, which examines financial reporting and accounting education, has been published widely in accounting and business journals. He is the recipient of the National Alumni Association Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award and the Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement in Research Award at the University of Alabama. He has also received the Notable Contribution to Literature Award of the Government and Nonprofit Section of the American Accounting Association and the Award for Excellence and Professional Contributions of the Alabama Association for Higher Education in Business. Professor Ingram is married and has two children. He and his family enjoy sports, travel, reading, music, and art. They live contentedly in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Thomas L. Albright is the J. Reese Phifer Faculty Fellow in the Culverhouse School of Accountancy at the University of Alabama. He teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in financial and managerial accounting. Professor Albright has received the Professor of the Year award on seven occasions in relation to his work with the MBA and Executive MBA students. Professor Albright is a Certified Public Accountant (California) and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee. He has received the Certificate of Merit from the Institute of Management Accountants for his work in the area of quality costs. Dr. Albright is actively involved with manufacturing companies in both the United States and Mexico. His work is used to help companies determine more accurate product costs and to develop better performance measures to achieve manufacturing excellence. Professor Albright lives with his wife, Debby, and their two children, Michael and Jenny. He enjoys scuba diving, underwater photography, and sailing.

There are a lot of typos and errors in this book. It is like the editor didn't even do any editing. Not only did they incorrectly publish their web address -- there are multiple problems that are incorrect. So many, in fact, they have a section on their website dedicated to corrections -- but some very blatent ones I found aren't even there.

The worst one yet is in chapter three. The ledger for closing entries in the solutions (pg F104) for self-study problem #3 (page F102) is different from the ledger of closing entries in Exhibit 11 on page F97.

For the self study problem, it should debit/decrease Sales Revenue and increase/credit Retained earnings. The solution on page F104 for the self study problem shows debiting/decreasing Retained earnings and increasing/crediting Sales Revenue.

The complete opposite of a closing entry. The book is full of errors like these.

And the crazy page numbering should be another concern.

Not an impressive book. Confusing for students. If your professor is asking you get it -- beg him to get ANYTHING ELSE.

Oh and the website 'student resources' section is pathetic. Solutions on the web don't match questions in the book. Sample quizes are poorly written and difficult to understand, also.

Valuing Intellectual Capital: Multinationals and Taxhavens (Management for Professionals), 1st Edition, Gio Wiederhold

Valuing Intellectual Capital provides readers with prescriptive strategies and practical insights for estimating the value of intellectual property (IP) and the people who create that IP within multinational companies. This book addresses the crucial topic of taxation from a rigorous and quantitative perspective, backed by experience and original research that illustrates how large corporations need to measure the worth of their intangible assets.

Each method in the text is applied through the lens of a model corporation, in order for readers to understand and quantify the operation of a real-world multinational enterprise and pinpoint how companies easily misvalue their intellectual capital when transferring IP rights to offshore tax havens. The effect contributes to the issues that can lead to budgetary crises, such as the so-called “fiscal cliff” that was partially averted by passage of the American Taxpayer Relief Act on New Year’s day 2013. This book also features a chapter containing recommendations for a fair and balanced corporate tax structure free of misvaluation and questionable mechanisms.

CFOs, corporate auditors, corporate financial analysts, corporate financial planners, economists, and journalists working with issues of taxation will benefit from the concepts and background presented in the book. The material clearly indicates how a trustworthy valuation of intellectual capital allows a realistic assessment of a company’s income, earnings, and obligations. Because of the intense interest in the topic of corporate tax avoidance the material is organized to be accessible to a broad audience.

College Accounting: A Contemporary Approach, 2nd Edition, M. David Haddock

Overview: The Haddock text features the successful author team Price et al. The author team based A Contemporary Approach on the solid foundation of the Price 12e textbook; however, in Haddock, the approach has been modified to fit the needs of a growing number of College Accounting instructors who teach the course without covering special journals. These instructors feel that special journals are an unnecessarily complicated subject for such a basic course.

By eliminating special journal coverage, professors are free to focus on recording to the general journal and posting to the general ledger - the basic bookkeeping functions that are so important to accountants in the real world. Competing books have placed special journals in an appendix (Slater) or tried to separate special journal coverage from general journal coverage but retain both (McQuaig).

Haddock is the only text on the market that eliminates special journal coverage completely (why make students pay for material they will not learn in the course?). With Haddock on the roster, instructor’s have a choice between a traditional approach that fully integrates special journals into the text in a succinct and logical way (Price 12e) or a contemporary approach that focuses on the basics and is more in keeping with where the course is headed in the future (Haddock 1e).

When I ordered the book I thought it was a great price and it was'nt until I got to class that I found out the book was part of a package. I also needed a workbook which I also had to buy for $23 with shipping and $40 code for online usage in order to turn in my homework. I was not happy about that. New packages are $115 with all and I ended up paying $120. Talking about a saving money, Ha! The seller should have made this clear. The information should have been there.

The text gives plenty of practice examples. The study guide (purchased separately) is simply a list to input solutions -- occasionally, the number of problems exceeds the number of solution places to input into the study guide (i.e. they are not synchronous). The major issue I have with the text is that for the practice problems students are supposed to challenge themselves with to see if they are accurately applying what they are learning, there are no cross-reference/solution keys to compare with. If you are getting this book as part of your NACPB certificate program, you're totally on your own and will no doubt have to buy other, more comprehensive textbooks to learn the trade. This book has too many voids to adequately study from as a complete textbook source and study guide.

It was okay. The book was an easy read, however one of the chapters I believe bank reconciliation can be considered by some to be useless.
