No matter what industry your company competes in, you need to have a firm understanding of how to create a direct link between shareholder value and critical business processes in order to improve performance and achieve long-term value. Performance Dashboards and Analysis for Value Creation contains the information and expertise you need to do just this—and much more.

From the Inside Flap
One of the primary objectives of today's corporate manager or director is to create value for the company's shareholders. Yet many managers and most employees still have difficulty in fully understanding the drivers of shareholder value and how their activities relate to these drivers.

With numerous years of experience in the world of finance—most recently as the founder and President of Value Advisory Group, LLC—author Jack Alexander knows what it takes to build long-term value in today's competitive business environment. And now, in Performance Dashboards and Analysis for Value Creation, he wants to show you how.

Straightforward and accessible, this timely resource will assist you in developing a comprehensive understanding of valuation and creating a direct link between shareholder value and critical business processes. Divided into three information-packed parts, Performance Dashboards and Analysis for Value Creation includes: Part One, Creating Context and Covering the Basics, provides a foundation for the concepts utilized in the Value Performance Framework (VPF)—a performance management system developed by Alexander—including basic finance concepts and valuation principles. Part Two, Linking Performance and Value, presents key elements of the VPF. Each of the value drivers—sales growth, relative pricing strength, operating effectiveness, capital effectiveness, cost of capital, and the intangibles—are linked to critical business activities and processes; and key performance measures, analytical models, performance dashboards, and tools for improving each value driver are explored in depth. Part Three, Driving Performance and Value, examines how the concepts and tools outlined throughout the book can be used to improve business performance and build long-term shareholder value. Effective implementation of dashboards as part of a comprehensive performance management framework (PMF) is discussed, and key findings—based on the author's benchmark study of performance and shareholder value—are reviewed.

To drive home the points discussed throughout the book, a companion website has been included. The analytical models and sample performance dashboards found on this website are the perfect way to begin developing dashboards and analysis for your specific needs.

Many companies use performance measures, but only a few have achieved the full potential benefits that a well-designed and implemented performance management framework has to offer. No matter what industry your company competes in, you need a way to measure, monitor, and manage the key activities and processes required to improve business performance and achieve long-term value. Performance Dashboards and Analysis for Value Creation contains the information and expertise you need to do just this—and much more.

From the Inside Flap
Imagine selling $2 million "worth" of Google stock and only receiving $50 in return? This scenario happens every day for venture-backed companies. Failure to quickly understand high-growth company valuation can cost trillions of dollars. Yet very few leaders involved in a venture-backed company have a definitive understanding of how valuation techniques are being applied to their financial statements and the decision-making process. Featuring extensive case studies of high-profile corporations, including Facebook, Twitter, and Microsoft, Venture Capital Valuation provides the knowledge and techniques necessary to understand and value high-growth companies.

Sharing his twenty-year track record helping thousands of investors, practitioners, and entrepreneurs measure and realize high-growth venture, author Lorenzo Carver draws on real-world cases from investors, founders, and advisors to illustrate how each corporation was impacted by valuations. By putting these techniques into a context and framework, Venture Capital Valuation simplifies them so that anyone founding, running, and investing in these innovative companies can apply them immediately.

Featuring a companion website where readers can access and download additional case study material, as well as different valuation materials mentioned throughout the text, Venture Capital Valuation explores:

Why what you don't know about valuation will cost you money
How VCs, angels, founders, and employees give up investment cash flow every day
Facebook at $80 billion valuation versus Enron at $80 billion valuation
Deal terms, waterfalls, and the pre-money myth
Whether venture-backed companies should even consider a discounted cash flow (DCF) model
Separating enterprise value from the allocation of that value
Valuing total equity
Using Future Value (FV) and Present Value (PV) to value future cash flows today
Why applying the typical DCF model to a venture-backed company hardly ever works
"Enterprise Value" + "Allocation Methods" = Value Destruction
Undervaluing companies and overvaluing employee options
Why you should D.O.W.T. (doubt) venture capital returns
409A valuation professionals discussing topic 820 (FAS 157) with VC CFOs

An invaluable resource for anyone who wants to make the most out of their investments, Venture Capital Valuation shows business appraisers and venture capitalists how to maximize their returns and avoid losing money—before the damage becomes irreparable

About the Author
Lorenzo Carver, MS, MBA, CVA, CPA, is CEO of Liquid Scenarios, a technology-based financial business intelligence solution company that provides services to investors, practitioners, entrepreneurs, and academics on how to measure and realize high-growth venture value. Carver has a twenty-year track record of helping thousands of clients understand how to measure and realize high-growth venture value. He is the author and developer of BallPark Business Valuation, the #1 selling, award-winning small-business valuation solution software covered by Bloomberg Businessweek, Entrepreneur, CPA Software News, The Kim Komando Show, and business journals worldwide.

I've read this book twice in the past year - excellent reference work that goes into the details of how to value a company and why valuations are often misunderstood or plain wrong. If in negotiations with a VC or when raising financing, this book is an absolute must. I'm an entrepreneur who has been "through the war" and this book has been extremely helpful for me. Being able to master the principles in this book will ensure that you are prepared to negotiate or position for better value.

One of the greatest values of the book was to read of the pitfalls (of which I've been part) that could easily be avoided by simple means - things that would have saved me $$ millions.

Absolutely focused on highly specialized valuation techniques (Black Scholes, Real Options). If it your first approach to the subject you better start with a more introductory alternative book. This book is centered in discussing not the main concepts of valuation but the technicalities that make some methodologies better than other.

Next Generation Excel: Modeling in Excel for Analysts and MBAs (Wiley Finance), 1st Edition, Isaac Gottlieb

ext Generation Excel – Modeling in Excel for Analysts and MBAs is not just another "how to use Excel" book. The content of this book is the distillation of the feedback of many years of teaching, both in classrooms as well as corporate workshops settings. It is the author's conclusion that in studying applications, people do not want to read long complicated explanations. Therefore, this book is filled with short descriptions and multiple screenshots, to walk the reader through the different manipulations. Excel is a very powerful—and extensive—software program. The intricacies can seem overwhelming to the casual user. This book is the answer to simplifying what might seem complicated. Using a step-by-step, hands-on approach, it will help anyone using the program discover many functions and achieve immediate results, quickly making efficient use of the power of the Excel options.

Some of the subjects covered in the book include:

Financial functions
Data mining using Pivot Tables
Statistics for non-statisticians
Accounting
What-if analysis, and many more.

Each chapter is subject-specific and can be consulted independently from the others. By opening the book at any chapter, the reader will find valuable information for immediate efficiency improvement.

Neither a beginner’s introductory book, nor a power-user's manual, Next Generation Excel—using Excel 2007, with explanations pertaining to Excel 2003 and previous versions when needed—is designed to appeal to analysts, executives, students, daily users as well as instructors in the software. All the techniques described have been extensively tested with students and workshop participants.

Users at any level will benefit from the wealth of information within, easily and rapidly.

From the Back Cover
"Dr. Isaac Gottlieb personally trained 35 of our top analysts and finance professionals in a customized advanced Excel seminar. Many of the tools covered in this book were part of this well-received training. For the past five years, Isaac’s monthly Excel-Tip-Of-The-Month newsletter has been a personal favorite of mine. In an age where email overload is common, I always look forward to his email and many of my associates and team members around the world are part of his over 50,000 monthly recipients. This compilation is a must-have for any finance professional who wants to be a better business partner and truly add value in a more efficient manner!" Anthony N. Caspio, CMA Vice President - Finance Sealed Air Corporation "Excel has been one of the most powerful applications of recent times, but most users, unfortunately, only scratch its surface. Prof. Gottlieb’s book leverages his years of Excel workshops in the US, Europe and Asia, and he unleashes the tremendous potential and power of Excel. His to-the-point explanations and his innovative screenshots bring Excel alive to readers who may just have a working knowledge of the software. This amazing volume is an application-oriented book for Excel users who want answers fast, and who need to maximize the application’s awesome potential." Prof. Farrokh Langdana, Ph.D. Director, Rutgers Executive MBA Professor, Rutgers Business School

"If I should thank Microsoft for inventing Excel, then I would like to thank Dr. Isaac Gottlieb more for teaching me how to use it to solve the real problems in my real work. Keep going Isaac!" Wu Haowen Director of International Programs School of Management, Dalian University of Technology

"Isaac Gottlieb's Next Generation Excel is an invaluable resource. The fruit of many years of teaching Excel to university business students, Gottlieb’s book covers the topics that the Excel user needs to become more efficient and sophisticated. It is easy to read and follow. A wonderful book!" Simon Benninga Professor of Finance, Faculty of Management, Tel Aviv University Author of Principles of Finance with Excel

"As an avid user of Excel, several years ago I came across Isaac's Excel-Tip-Of-The-Month newsletter. I quickly realized that Isaac exploits Excel to the “next usability level.” Like his monthly newsletters, Isaac has composed a book that is clear and concise similarly reflecting his teaching methods. This book helps intermediate users to rapidly acquire Excel-pro skills, while allowing advanced users to grasp concepts in one single pass-through. Furthermore, Isaac takes day-to-day challenges and provides elegant ease of use solutions." Moshe Castiel Manager, IT – Technology & Operations TIAA-CREF

"Next Generation Excel presents an interesting perspective on the resourcefulness of Microsoft Excel like never before. This book is an excellent and a much-needed resource to MBA students, educators and Excel enthusiasts. In reviewing this book, the principal criteria included content, organization and Excel add-on files. The book is neatly organized into sections; starting with basic Excel tools and functions, commonly used statistical tools, what-if-analysis and then moving on to advanced data features, solver-add ins and various other ToolPaks, nicely complemented with the Excel snapshots to provide a user friendly experience. As a result, one can jump directly to the relevant sections and use the Excel files provided to get a more hands-on experience. The right mix of theory and practice, is the unique selling point (USP) of this book!" Anirudha "Andy" Vaidya, MBA CEO AVS System

Sarbanes-Oxley Guide for Finance and Information Technology Professionals, 2nd Edition, Sanjay Anand

Praise for Sarbanes-Oxley Guide for Finance and Information Technology Professionals "Effective SOX programs enlist the entire organization to build and monitor a compliant control environment. However, even the best SOX programs are inefficient at best, ineffective at worst, if there is a lack of informed, competent finance and IT personnel to support the effort. This book provides these important professionals a needed resource for and road map toward successfully implementing their SOX initiative." —Scott Green Chief Administrative Officer, Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP and author, Sarbanes-Oxley and the Board of Directors

"As a former CFO and CIO, I found this book to be an excellent synopsis of SOX, with impressive implementation summaries and checklists." —Michael P. Cangemi CISA, Editor in Chief, Information Systems Control Journal and author, Managing the Audit Function

"An excellent introduction to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act from the perspective of the financial and IT professionals that are on the front lines of establishing compliance in their organizations. The author walks through many areas by asking 'what can go wrong' types of questions, and then outlines actions that should be taken as well as the consequences of noncompliance. This is a good book to add to one's professional library!" —Robert R. Moeller Author, Sarbanes-Oxley and the New Internal Auditing Rules

"Mr. Anand has compiled a solid overview of the control systems needed for not only accounting systems, but also the information technologies that support those systems. Among the Sarbanes books on the market, his coverage of both topics is unique." —Steven M. Bragg Author, Accounting Best Practices

"An excellent overview of the compliance process. A must-read for anyone who needs to get up to speed quickly with Sarbanes-Oxley." —Jack Martin Publisher, Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance Journal

This comprehensive guide provides a complete methodology for achieving Sarbanes-Oxley compliancy, namely the Sarbanes-Oxley Compliant Key Enterprise Technology (SOCKET) framework. The author is one of the world's leading regulatory compliance experts and Chairperson of the SOX Institute.

In terms of getting things done (and why it needs to be done) this is an excellent book. The SOCKET framework is laid out very clearly and you will find material and PowerPoint friendly bulleted lists covering every aspect of a SOX project (or, more accurately, a process).

Compared to the Manager's Guide to Compliance, the chapters constitute a more coherent narrative with more emphasis on organisational and IT issues. Compared to The Joy of SOX, it provides a generally more detailed coverage (but it is less entertaining). To give an example, the book contains a brilliant mapping between Sections of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, business processes and affected technologies. Of course, it is not rocket science, but it is great value for money. For the IT professional, it goes beyond the presentation of the usual suspects COSO and COBIT by covering e.g. the ISO 1335 and 17799 standards.

Yet, despite the level of detail, the author manages to keep the momentum as he takes the reader through all the steps of a SOX compliance process in terms of the SOCKET framework. This implies that some important topics have been moved to the Appendices (that includes about 35 pages on COBIT 3 and 4).

One could wish for more examples and templates, but it is apparently easier said than done. (Another book from the same publisher that should provide templates, key processes, and checklists has been postponed until February 2007.) Apparently, Sanjay Anand is currently working on another book Essentials of Sarbanes-Oxley that will include "Tips and Techniques" and "In the Real World" features with realistic advice on compliance. At least until then, the Sarbanes-Oxley Guide is the book to buy.

"This is the first book I have seen to carefully cover such a wide set of topics in both theoretical and applied fixed-income modelling, ranging from the use of market information to obtain yield curves, to the pricing and hedging of bonds and fixed-income derivatives, to the currently active topic of defaultable yield-curve modelling. It will be particularly useful to practitioners." - Darrell Duffie, Stanford University "This is the most comprehensive theoretical treatment of the subject I've ever seen." - Mark Rubinstein, Haas School of Business, University of California "An excellent review of interest rate models and of the pricing and hedging principles in the fixed-income area." - Oldrich Alfons Vasicek, KMV Corporation

Computer Accounting with QuickBooks Pro 2010, 12th Edition, Donna Kay

Computer Accounting with QuickBooks Pro 2010 will take students to the next level as they learn the most up-to-date and most in demand software on the market. This market leading textbook walks the student through the process of setting up a company in QuickBooks in a step-by-step manner, allowing the student to learn QB without requiring as much assistance from their instructor. Each chapter builds on the previous chapter as the student progresses from entering simple transactions to using advanced QuickBooks features. The first part of the text provides a hands-on introduction to QuickBooks, and the second half focuses on maintaining a service and merchandising business, as well as on advanced features of QuickBooks. Computer Accounting with QuickBooks 2010 provides both the big picture “Where am I going?” and step-by-step instructions “Where do I click?”

About the Author
Donna Kay (formerly Donna Ulmer) is Assistant Professor of Accounting and Accounting Information Systems at Maryville University in Saint Louis, Missouri, where she teaches both undergraduate and graduate accounting. Dr. Kay earned B.S. and MBA degrees from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville before receiving a Ph.D. from Saint Louis University, where she conducted action research on the perceived effectiveness of instructional techniques in the computer classroom. Named to Who’s Who Among American Women, Dr. Kay holds certifications as both a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP) and is an active member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Missouri Society of CPAs, the American Accounting Association and the Missouri Association of Accounting Educators. Dr. Kay serves on the Information Technology Committee of the MSCPA.

I could not wait to get my hands on this textbook simply because I knew it would make accounting much easier. However, I was unsure of how easy it would be to learn the ins and outs of QB. Well, needless to say, this textbook has made everything seem easy! It breaks down every basic thing you need to know about the software. Any question you may have can be answered in this text. I would recommend this text to any accounting student or person who needs to learn QB. This is knowledge that is useful for just about any job.

This book was very hard to follow in some of the problems. I had a hard time reading and following the text. I feel this should be almost a 3 semester book not a 2 semester book. There is alot to read and understand in this book.

This textbook will walk you through step-by-step on how to use Quickbooks. It's great if you're new to using this software program. This book provides plenty of screenshots, so you could follow through with what the author is doing. But be mindful that there are a few inconsistencies with what the author say what to do or what is the correct answer and what the pictures show. I also found quite a bit of typos in the book, and I am only in Chapter 5. Seriously, what are siabilities (page 2.12)? The author probably should have hired a better editor!

This textbook comes with two CDs. One is the actual Quickbooks software, but it's only a Student Trial edition, so it will only work for 140 days once installed. And by the way, it's a one time installation, so if you don't have the Quickbooks software and thinking of buying a used book, you should really reconsidered buying a new one instead. And after you install the CD, please be aware that you must register the Quickbooks product, or the program will stop working in 30 days. Lame, I know. And the other CD contains the data files (All QBBs, I believe), so you could work along with the book.

I got the book in perfect time, the day before my class started. I was expecting it to be later than it was. Book was in perfect condition, and had the CD's in it that I needed with the book. Very Satisfied.

The only thing I don't like is that it's a spiral bound book and it's soft covered, but this book came quicker and in better condition than expected. Thank you!

Valuing Intangible Assets, 1st Edition, Robert Reilly Jr.

When partnerships change hands, the valuation of intangible assets can be a financial maze. This in-depth book, working through each of the basic valuation approaches: cost, market, and income, provides professionals with complete guidelines and industry standards. It's a must-have for financial analysts and attorneys!

From the Back Cover
The one-volume intangible valuation library--from trusted authorities Robert Reilly and Robert Schweihs. Seen as a science by some professionals--as an art by others--the accurate valuation of intangible assets can nonetheless be a daunting financial maze. In their latest comprehensive valuation resource, financial experts Robert F. Reilly and Robert P. Schweihs present in detail the theory and methodology associated with the identification, valuation, and economic analysis of intangible assets. Valuing Intangible Assets provides the necessary skills, judgment, and knowledge to truy understand the entire process of intangible valuation.

Beginning with a general, fundamental overview of the topic, and building to more specific, advanced theories and practices, this essential book: clarifies the distinctions--and also the relationships--between tangible and intangible assets; works through each of the three basic valuation approaches--cost, market, and income--with guideliens to determine which is appropriate for a given situation; discusses remaining useful life analysis, transfer pricing analysis, and economic damanges analysis; summarizes professional standards, including USPAP intangible asset valuation and reporting standards; introduces and describes specific types of intangibles: contract, copyright, goodwill, and more; provides entertaining and in-depth case studies to provide real-world application for concepts and activities

About the Author
Robert F. Reilly and Robert P. Schweihs are managing directors of Willamette Management Associates, and accredited senior appraisers of the American Society of Appraisers (certified in business valuation). They are coauthors of a number of highly regarded valuation books, including Valuing a Business, Valuing Small Businesses and Professional Practices, and Valuing Professional Practices. They are also coeditors of Financial Valuation: Businesses and Business Interests, 1997 Update. Mr. Reilly is a certified review appraiser, and a state certified affiliate of the Appraisal Institute. As an appraiser and economist, he is often called upon to testify in domestic and international courts regarding the valuation of intangible assets, businesses, and business interests, and regarding various economic damages issues. Mr. Schweihs currently serves as a Trustee of The Appraisal Foundation and as a member of the Industry Advisory Council of The Appraisal Foundation. He, too, is often called upon to testify as an expert witness in contested valuation and economic analysis matters.

A larger portion of the value of a company nowadays comes from Intangibles (brands, patents, workforce & related contracts, durable customers etc.). This holds true in several industry sectors. Measurement of intangibles is a fascinating subject, but until this book was published, there was no single body of knowledge available to guide the general reader, or a Valuation professional. You had to work in one of the reputed valuation firms to be exposed to the techniques. This book is by far the best practitioner-oriented Intangibles Valuation book I have come across. It is very comprehensive in terms of the topics it covers, and does a wonderful job of covering almost all intangibles of interest. Each chapter is written by a relevant expert, and this invariably leads to variations in quality and some lack of consistency. However, for the most part, it is very well written, and definitely worth the price it sells for.

For those who are interested in the management of organizational knowledge and intangible assets, 'Valuing intangible assets'should prove to be highly practical. There are many knowledge management frameworks out there that assist business executive to manage their intangible assets (such as Sveiby's intangible asset monitor), the practical usage of these frameworks would be greatly enhanced by incorporating the valuation aspect of intangible assets. Reilly has provided a comprehensive illustration of both the 'scientific' & 'artistic' aspects of valuating intangible assets. 'Valuing Intangible Assets' is easy to read & loaded with useful examples, it is a rare one in the market.

This book is practical and easy to read, provided you know the basic principles of valuations. I would not recommend it as an introduction because it is burdened with too many details. It gives a systematic and thorough introduction to the subject. Do not expect to read this book and be able to do any complicated valuation on your own. However, you will be able to lead more informed discussions with appraisers AND with the tax authorities. You will also be able to review valuations by appraisers more critically and judge their quality or to assess in the preparation phase the relevance of information required.

Cost of Capital in Litigation: Applications and Examples (Wiley Finance), 4th Edition, Shannon P. Pratt

Praise for Cost of Capital in Litigation: Applications and Examples

"After revising their existing text, Cost of Capital: Applications and Examples, the authors have endeavored to expand their treatment of the subject and further explore the role of cost of capital in the courts. Addressing various methods for calculating value and different standards of value, the authors explain how courts may differ in their decisions based on the topic, jurisdiction, or available evidence. This new compilation is an important contribution to the field of valuation and will serve as an imminently helpful resource for attorneys and judges. Shannon Pratt and Roger Grabowski have provided yet another thoughtful, helpful, and excellent resource for all practitioners interested in how appraisers and courts have, and should, arrive at value."? —From the Foreword by David Laro, Judge, United States Tax Court

"Cost of Capital in Litigation is a very helpful resource for litigators faced with valuation disputes involving an assessment of discounted cash flows. In the area with which I am most familiar—Delaware valuation law—it is thorough and insightful. More important to me, its introductory material nicely lays out the conceptual structure of the valuation issue, and the remaining chapters gather lots of information about the treatment of the issue in areas with which I am less familiar, (such as bankruptcy law and domestic property litigation)." —Lawrence A. Hamermesh, Ruby R. Vale Professor of Corporate and Business Law, Widener University School of Law, Wilmington, Delaware

"Cost of Capital in Litigation comprehensively deals with a difficult subject, pointing out common grounds as well as differences among experts in the treatment of this subject. It is a must first stop for the uninitiated in the subject and the ultimate checklist that every practitioner should consult. Particularly useful are the chapters focusing with the eyes of experts on the treatment of cost of capital in specific areas of litigation. Notably, the authors alert the reader to those aspects of the various methods for determining cost of capital that may differentiate among the suitability of the methods based on available data, the circumstances presented, and the legal issue under consideration." —Reeves Westbrook, Esq., Partner and Chair of the Tax Group, Covington & Burling LLP

"Shannon Pratt and Roger Grabowski have consolidated information on important theoretical valuation frameworks, practical applications, and case law needed by finance professionals, attorneys, and judges in these challenging times. Cost of Capital in Litigation serves as a solid well-written reference on cost of capital and valuation that I recommend to both practitioners and students." —Theodore Barnhill, Professor of Finance and Director of the Global and Entrepreneurial Finance Research Institute, The George Washington University

"Valuation in litigation settings requires careful analysis, solid evidence, and defensible positions. Cost of Capital in Litigation details the nuances and subtle but critical elements of crafting a defens-ible position for experts, attorneys, and others who need to understand how and why valuation cases are won and lost." —Hal Heaton, Professor of Finance, Marriott School of Management, Brigham Young University

"Discount rates are often crucial components in calculating damages. Even small changes in these numbers can have large effects on the amounts in dispute—and the magnitude of damages won or lost. Cost of Capital in Litigation explains the underlying economic theory. It then offers separate chapters elaborating on rate of return approaches in their widely varied forensic contexts. This helpful compendium even includes an outline of cost of capital questions for use by attorneys and their financial experts. No business litigator should be without it." —Peter V. Baugher, Esq., Partner, Schopf & Weiss LLP

From the Inside Flap
Cost of Capital in Litigation: Applications and Examples

The "cost of capital" is the expected rate of return for the purpose of attracting funds, and its estimation has long been recognized as one of the most critical elements in business valuation and damages calculations. Addressing the many different methods of calculating value and different standards of value, Cost of Capital in Litigation delves deeply into the myriad reasons why and how courts may differ in their decisions based on the topic, jurisdiction, or available evidence.

Because cost of capital is critical to the valuation of any ongoing business, the thorough understanding, analysis, and presentation of cost of capital issues goes a long way toward winning in court. Navigating deftly between fundamentals and intricate nuances, Cost of Capital in Litigation addresses the needs of those in the valuation profession who require both introductory materials and detailed analysis. Shannon Pratt and Roger Grabowski—two major figures in the world of business valuation—draw on their decades of experience in business valuations and as expert witnesses to highlight major decisions as well as errors to avoid.

A valuable resource for attorneys and valuation experts, Cost of Capital in Litigation includes:

A useful summary of investment and valuation fundamentals, including explanations of economic theories and valuation models
The cost of capital and discount rates in various court cases, including estate and gift tax cases, intellectual property disputes, bankruptcies, and family law cases
Exceptionally detailed reviews of the methodology propounded by experts, and those accepted or rejected by courts, along with commentary on the experts' and courts' reasoning and analysis
Summaries of existing court decisions, plus discussion of flaws in reasoning, methodology, and analysis that should be considered in the future by litigants, experts, attorneys, and judges
A summary of how the Delaware Court of Chancery and the Delaware Supreme Court have viewed the discounted cash flow method
Summaries of cost of capital guidelines used by state assessment authorities in unitary assessment matters
Comprehensive discussion of cost of capital methods used in regulated industries for rate making

Complemented by a foreword by David Laro, Judge of the United States Tax Court, Cost of Capital in Litigation will help professionals in the legal, financial and accounting fields develop a thorough understanding of court decisions within the context of the theory of cost of capital.

"The text book emphazises the applications of statistics and probability to finance. … The book will serve as a text in courses aimed at advanced undergraduates and masters students in statistics, engineering, and applied mathematics as well as quantitatively oriented MBA students. Those in the finance industry wishing to know more statistics could also use it for self-study." (Zentralblatt für Didaktik der Mathematik, July, 2004)

From the Back Cover
This textbook emphasizes the applications of statistics and probability to finance. Students are assumed to have had a prior course in statistics, but no background in finance or economics. The basics of probability and statistics are reviewed and more advanced topics in statistics, such as regression, ARMA and GARCH models, the bootstrap, and nonparametric regression using splines, are introduced as needed. The book covers the classical methods of finance such as portfolio theory, CAPM, and the Black-Scholes formula, and it introduces the somewhat newer area of behavioral finance. Applications and use of MATLAB and SAS software are stressed.

The book will serve as a text in courses aimed at advanced undergraduates and masters students in statistics, engineering, and applied mathematics as well as quantitatively oriented MBA students. Those in the finance industry wishing to know more statistics could also use it for self-study.
