Discounting, Libor, CVA and Funding: Interest Rate and Credit Pricing (Applied Quantitative Finance), 1st Edition, Chris Kenyon

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1137268514/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1137268514&linkCode=as2&tag=bestaccounting-20

The credit and sovereign debt crises have fundamentally changed the way participants in the global financial markets perceive credit risk. The effects of this change have been studied by many leading experts in Mathematical Finance, but to date there is no single volume that combines the results of this research and presents them at a level suited for practitioners and students alike. In market practice this fundamental market change is most directly visible from significant bases throughout the interest rate world, especially tenor bases, cross-currency bases, and bond-cds bases. This means that the curve used for discounting is no longer the curve used for Libor (aka Fixing Curve or Forwarding Curve).

In the last two years a consensus has emerged that this multi-curve pricing is now standard. The crises have also altered the perception of banks and governments - they are no longer regarded as zero-risk counterparties. Now both sides of an uncollateralized trade need to consider, and price in, the risk that the other defaults: my CVA is your DVA. Even collateralization does not remove pricing problems: when you post collateral how much do you have to pay for it? This FVA is not symmetric in many ways: whatever it costs you to source it, your counterparty will only pay you OIS. Even worse is that your funding costs are unlikely to be the same as those of all your counterparties.Discounting, Libor, CVA and Funding: Interest Rate and Credit Pricing is the first book to illustrate new ways of pricing interest rate and credit products in the post-crisis markets. Written by two seasoned practitioners, it will enable the readers to understand the many different versions of credit and basis spreads, and to build the appropriate discount curves that take the these spreads into account so that collateralized derivatives will be priced correctly.

The authors guide the reader through the complexity added by OIS discounting and multi-curve pricing as well as CVA, DVA and FVA. Derivatives do not exist in a vacuum. Regulators world-wide have reacted strongly to the crises with the introduction of Basel III. Hitherto quants could ignore capital costs and charges, but as of January 2013 this world is gone. Discounting, Libor, CVA and Funding explains details of Basel III that are important for pricing, especially around the CVA VaR and default exposure capital charges. This book will be required reading for quantitative practitioners who need to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in derivatives pricing, and will also be of interest to academic researchers and students interested in how instruments are priced in practice.

Review
"The ongoing economic situation is pushing researchers to re-discuss and update the fundamentals of financial modeling. Writing an encyclopedic book on financial modeling for exotics based on the risk free rate, a unique discount curve, no credit risk and no liquidity costs would be neither relevant nor realistic in 2012. This is not such a book. The reader will find here an interesting tackling of current and relevant problems such as multi-curve modeling and credit valuation adjustments, with a very interesting discussion of closeout and especially goodwill, which cannot be found anywhere else to the best of this endorser's knowledge. Funding costs, hints at systemic risk, regulation, and Basel III are also considered. It is great to find a quantitatively detailed analysis of such aspects in a single book, and readers who are open-minded and attentive to the current challenges posed by the market will find this book to be informative, relevant, pleasant to read, and even entertaining." - Prof. Damiano Brigo, Head of the Mathematical Finance Research Group, Imperial College, London, and author of Interest Rate Models: Theory and Practice (Springer) and Credit Models and the Crisis (Wiley).

The Professional's Guide to Fair Value: The Future of Financial Reporting (Wiley Corporate F&A), 1st Edition, James P. Catty

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1118004388/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1118004388&linkCode=as2&tag=bestaccounting-20

An all-encompassing guide to the elements and basics of fair value

With the important role fair value is playing in the creation of a converged set of global accounting standards, demand for products in this category is growing spectacularly. The elements and basics of fair value are covered, including risk, dealing with the SEC, and details on legal responsibility. In addition, sample financial statements are included, along with tables, recommended applicable techniques, and management checklists for those who are responsible for preparing and approving of financial statements.

-Written by the Chairman and co-CEO of the International Association of Consultants, Valuators and Analysts (IACVA\
-Includes sample financial statements of both U.S. and foreign companies

Appropriate for anyone involved professionally with finance—managers, accountants, investors, bankers, instructors, and students—The Professional's Guide to Fair Value is a reliable reference on the ins and outs of fair value financial disclosure.

This book provides an excellent discussion of "fair value," which is an accounting concept. The author makes a very clear explanation of the distinction between fair value and other types of value, such as "fair market value." The text and examples are well-written and help in understanding the author's points.

Another thing I like about this book is that it is relatively new - copyright in 2012 - so it includes many recent accounting pronouncements and the latest thinking on certain topics brought about after the 2008-2009 financial crisis. In some parts, the author does go into quite a bit of detail, which is helpful for more novice students. For more experienced readers, the most value, in my opinion, come from the conceptual chapters (i.e., first five chapters of the book). Overall, this is a very good book that should be helpful to readers of all levels.

From the Inside Flap
Enterprise risk management is a complex yet critical issue that all companies must deal with as they head into the twenty-first century. It empowers you to balance risks with rewards as well as people with processes. But to master the numerous aspects of enterprise risk management, you must intergrate risk management into the culture and operations of the business. No one knows this better than risk management expert James Lam. In Enterprise Risk Management: From Incentives to Controls, Lam distills twenty years worth of experience in this field to give you a clear understanding of both the art and science of enterprise risk management.

Organized into four comprehensive sections, Enterprise Risk Management offers in-depth insights, practical advice, and real-world case studies that explore every aspect of this important field. You’ll also learn seven essential risk management lessons through discussions of some of the major financial disasters of years past. With this knowledge in hand, you’ll be introduced to some of the key concepts, processes, and tools underlying risk management.

In Section II: "The Enterprise Risk Management Framework," you’ll receive an executive education on the business rationale for integrating risk management processes, and discover the seven building blocks for developing an enterprise risk management program. You’ll also discover how the role of Chief Risk Officer has changed in today’s firm.

Section III: "Risk Management Applications" discusses the applications of risk management in two dimensions–functions and industries. You’ll become familiar with the functional requirements for credit, market, and operational risks, as well as learn how risk management has evolved from a control function to a function that enables performance optimization. Industry segments including financial institutions, energy firms, asset management firms, and nonfinancial corporations are also explored with an eye toward key business trends and risk management requirements in these sectors.

Section IV: "A Look to the Future" rounds out this comprehensive discussion of enterprise risk management by examining emerging topics in risk management with respect to people and technology. A forward-looking story reveals how best-practice risk management might look in the year 2010.

GAAP Handbook of Policies and Procedures (w/CD-ROM) (2014), 1st Edition, CPA Joel G. Siegel Ph.D.

The 2014 GAAP Handbook of Policies and Procedures is the most complete and user-friendly source of on-the-job help for applying generally accepted accounting principles in practice. It provides guidance in resolving any issues and problems that the accountant may face day-to-day in applying GAAP. The GAAP Handbook provides many rules of thumb. Its content includes informative rules, policies, and procedures applicable to CPAs and may be used as a training medium. This practical reference contains all of the important authoritative pronouncements on GAAP with references to ASC codification, and the corresponding references to the original literature, including APB Opinions, Accounting Research Bulletins, FASB Statements, Staff Positions, Interpretations, Technical Bulletins, and Concepts, as well as AICPA Statements of Position as an aid.

Securities and Exchange Financial Reporting Releases and EITF Issues are also covered when appropriate. This volume contains accounting principles, financial reporting presentation requirements, required and recommended disclosures, and specialized accounting topics. The book includes examples, tables, exhibits, and practice aids that demonstrate how to apply GAAP in practice. In some cases, flowcharts are presented to explain, in clearer terms, the practitioner's decision process in applying a pronouncement. Current footnotes from annual reports provide clear examples of reporting. The book also comes with a free companion CD-ROM that contains an electronic version of the book. Subscribers can also earn online CPE credits through the CCH Learning Center (see the book's Highlights pages for more information).

Dr. Shim has 40 books to his credit and has published more than 50 articles in accounting and financial journals, including The CPA Journal, Advances in Accounting, International Accountant, and Financial Management.

First, don't be misled by the title. You won't get much help if you're trying to write accounting procedures at your company.

The thick "Handbook of Policies and Procedures" has quite a bit of padding, in the form of (often old) annual report excerpts from various companies. These occupy too much of the book, in my opinion, and they are of limited value anyway in this day and age of electronically available SEC filings. If I wanted the 2004 AICPA Trends and Techniques, I would have bought it :(

In fairness, the handbook does have broad coverage of many GAAP topics, logically structured around the financial statements, and it's a useful part of my desk library. And I like the CD that comes with it.

As an industry CPA involved in external disclosure, I find myself referring to Wiley GAAP 2008 a little more often, though, for more in-depth, interpretative guidance - without the lazily copied filler ;)

Elliott Wave Principle: Key to Market Behavior (Wiley Trading Advantage), 1st Edition, A. J. Frost

"This is a definitive, excellent book on Elliott, and I recommend it to all who have an interest in the Wave Principle." Richard Russell, Dow Theory Letters "Gold and Silver Today wholeheartedly endorses this book. It is the definitive work on a scientific wave theory of human experience. If you are interested in technical or wave analysis, it should be required reading." Gold & Silver Today "This book is extremely well done. It is clear, brief and bold....by far the most useful and comprehensive for both the beginner and the veteran." William Dilanni, Wellington Mgmt. Co.

"An outstanding job...I don't think a better basic handbook of Elliott Wave theory could be written." Donald J. Hoppe, Business and Investment Analysis "...A top-drawer reference for serious technical analysts....all the nuts and bolts necessary to do their own Elliott Wave assembly." Futures Magazine "Chapter Three is the best description of Fibonacci numbers we've seen in print and that alone is worth the price of the book." Janes Dines, The Dines Letter

"In a third of a lifetime in this business, this was the first time I really understood Elliott, and this is certainly the first book on Elliott that I could recommend. All the methods that Prechter has used so successfully are fully described in this book." The Professional Investor "Elliott Wave Principle is such an important, fascinating, even mind-bending work, we are convinced that it should be read by and and every serious student of the market, be they fundamentalist or technician, dealing in stocks, bonds or commodities." Market Decisions

"Even allowing for minor stumbles, that 1978 prediction must go down as the most remarkable stick market prediction of all time." James W. Cowan, Monitor Money Review Recipient of the Technical Analysis Association's Award of Excellence

When I first opened this book, I had already read numerous books on Technical Analysis, including candlesticks, momentum oscillators, volume indicators and basic chart patterns. It became obvious to me that the Elliott Wave Principle lies at the heart of why certain chart patterns work only a certain percentage of the time; for what one is seeing in chart patterns is the formation of robust fractals, or Elliott Waves. Chart patterns are the blunt tool and Elliott Waves, the knife - at least in a probabalistic sense, as no method provides perfect accuracy.

This book is not for the mentally lazy, which included me when I first started reading it. In fact, it took me several months just to get through it, understand it and then apply it in real time chart reading. I still keep going back to it as a reference. However, if you have an obsessive desire to understand the financial markets, you will make it through the book and be rewarded with a perspective that VERY few have on the financial markets and, therefore, the psychology of crowds.

I would suggest The Wave Principle of Human Social Behaviour (also by Prechter) before reading the highly technical Elliott Wave Principle. Your want to learn the details of the Elliott Wave Principle will then be fully primed.

Read this book with an open mind and investigate the suggested patterns and you will be amazed what you see.

I remember looking at a 4 year chart of the sp500 after reading this book and trying to observe the "3s" and "5s" and was shocked to see them staring back at me.

It is hard going at first - especially the first couple of chapters, but take it slow and it will soon sink in - you won't regret that you spent the time to learn Elliot Wave Theory

This book is the easiest to read, most direct and to the point book that is solely on Elliott Wave. It tells all the possible moves, how they happen, and why. The book also goes into the very necessary explanation of Fibonacci and time relationships with regard to price. Many gold nuggets of information contained within this book; it is the most simple, complete Elliott Wave book you can get.

But the biggest problem is...most people just don't "get it"... Elliott Wave and Elliott's findings are SO MUCH MORE than the financial markets. The fundamental discoveries that govern the Wave Principle and thus the behavior of the financial markets are the very same fundamental forces at work throughout the entire universe. When you have a deep understanding of the Wave Principle, Socionomics, and science in general, you can begin to see how everything around us all ties together to form this awesome grand scheme of life and existance. A deep understanding of Elliott Wave and Fibonacci is the key to opening a whole new world of knowledge, application, and the birth of a new science.

After reading this book I've decided to study Elliot Waves very carefully. While the book is fairly short the job of constructing degrees and understanding the rules/guidelines will take time to master. The reason I feel it's worth the time is that only Elliot Wave provided a structured way to understand short and long term cycles. The stacking and governance by degree provide meaningful insight into predicting future price movement.

Performance Dashboards and Analysis for Value Creation contains the information and expertise you need to do just this—and much more.

From the Inside Flap
One of the primary objectives of today's corporate manager or director is to create value for the company's shareholders. Yet many managers and most employees still have difficulty in fully understanding the drivers of shareholder value and how their activities relate to these drivers. With numerous years of experience in the world of finance—most recently as the founder and President of Value Advisory Group, LLC—author Jack Alexander knows what it takes to build long-term value in today's competitive business environment. And now, in Performance Dashboards and Analysis for Value Creation, he wants to show you how.

Straightforward and accessible, this timely resource will assist you in developing a comprehensive understanding of valuation and creating a direct link between shareholder value and critical business processes. Divided into three information-packed parts, Performance Dashboards and Analysis for Value Creation includes: Part One, Creating Context and Covering the Basics, provides a foundation for the concepts utilized in the Value Performance Framework (VPF)—a performance management system developed by Alexander—including basic finance concepts and valuation principles. Part Two, Linking Performance and Value, presents key elements of the VPF. Each of the value drivers—sales growth, relative pricing strength, operating effectiveness, capital effectiveness, cost of capital, and the intangibles—are linked to critical business activities and processes; and key performance measures, analytical models, performance dashboards, and tools for improving each value driver are explored in depth. Part Three, Driving Performance and Value, examines how the concepts and tools outlined throughout the book can be used to improve business performance and build long-term shareholder value. Effective implementation of dashboards as part of a comprehensive performance management framework (PMF) is discussed, and key findings—based on the author's benchmark study of performance and shareholder value—are reviewed.

To drive home the points discussed throughout the book, a companion website has been included. The analytical models and sample performance dashboards found on this website are the perfect way to begin developing dashboards and analysis for your specific needs.

Many companies use performance measures, but only a few have achieved the full potential benefits that a well-designed and implemented performance management framework has to offer. No matter what industry your company competes in, you need a way to measure, monitor, and manage the key activities and processes required to improve business performance and achieve long-term value. The Ultimate Trading Guide, 1st Edition, John R. Hill

How to Spot Short-Term Trends, Trading Systems That Work, Money Management Techniques, and Patterns for Profit

Become the ultimate trader!

The Ultimate Trading Guide is your chance to get what every trader wants, but few have: the know-how to develop and correctly use a logic-based, reliable, and profitable methodology for successful buying and selling-now. In this complete tutorial, one of today's most respected analysts and his partners provide you with all you need to know to develop an original, computerized system that works for you.

"Can you make money trading the markets with a system? You bet, and this is the book that shows how it's done, based on decades of research and actual trading."-Larry Williams, Author, Day Trade Futures Online and Long-Term Secrets to Short-Term Trading

"Traders at all levels of experience will find a treasure chest of knowledge and guidance in The Ultimate Trading Guide. Advice from these expert authors, gained over decades of trading, research, and study of markets and systems, is virtually priceless. This book receives my highest recommendation."-Edward D. Dobson, President, Traders Press, Inc.

"John Hill, George Pruitt, and Lundy Hill are the acknowledged masters in the design and development of mechanical trading systems. So it's no surprise The Ultimate Trading Guide gets my highest recommendation for those interested in the mechanized trading of stocks and futures." -Gary Smith, Author, How I Trade for a Living

"A well-written and thoroughly enjoyable book. It is filled with refreshingly new ways of looking at the market, combined with valuable perceptions that can only come from John Hill's years of experience and the ability to see the big picture. My congratulations to John for his tenacity in delivering Futures Truth." -Perry Kaufman, Author, Trading Systems and Methods, President, Strategic Market Systems

No news here. these guys are purely technical. Hill, Lundy and Hill have written their book from years of experience with mechanical trading systems that have made them highly regarded experts. In black and white, what works and what doesn't, will be made clear to the reader from the knowledge of its authors. It is estimated that 80% of the 30 billion dollars in the managed futures industry is traded by systematic methods. It is also estimated that 80% of the traders lose money. This book was written to allow traders to recognize and exploit an edge in the markets. Examples in both the futures and securities are made to prove the authors' point.

In the beginning, there is the almighty bar chart and a whole chapter devoted to its proper interpretation. According to these guys, all you need to know is in the charts and nowhere else. And with those bar charts a very simple and complete take on the Elliot Wave Theory will demystify even the most obtuse of the technically impaired. Walk-through examples of trading styles and applications of chart patterns are engaging and relevant to all kinds of markets.

The book contains an introduction to mechanical trading systems. Tips on what to look for and where not to look for a system will be very valuable to the inexperienced. Advice on hardware, software, data and testing are also covered, making it a worthy read for anyone interested in mechanical trading.

The authors bring precious bits of wisdom with their experience. Though systems are mechanical in design, the mental toughness required to achieve success is important, and much can be learned from the experienced. Make no mistake, this book is not about easy money, but about the reality of achieving success. As the authors put it:

"There is a giant chasm between knowledge and a successful trader. Few of us are able to make the leap, and those that do must be on the alert or they will fall back into the abyss."
