Accounting: Tools for Business Decision Making, 5th Edition, Jerry J. Weygandt

With this 5th edition, readers will acquire a practical set of tools and the confidence they need to use them effectively in making business decisions. The authors follow a "macro- to micro-" strategy by starting with a discussion of real financial statements first, rather than starting with the Accounting Cycle. The objective is to establish how a financial statement communicates the financing, investing, and operating activities of a business to users of accounting information.

This motivates readers by grounding the discussion in the real world, showing them the relevance of the topics covered to their careers. New content features such as a fresh and focused approach to Excel, “People, Profit, Planet”, a revised continuing managerial case, and new managerial accounting videos will also engage students and differentiate Kimmel Accounting 5e from the prior edition.

I really love this text and wish I had found it when I first started studying accounting. The book has excellent coverage of financial statements and some of the material that usually gives accounting newbies the hardest time. I feel even a baby can understand accounting the way that this book teaches it.

The book's coverage of accounting fundamentals is comprehensive and I will highly recommend it for first year accounting students or students who haven't had more than a year of accounting.

I can't say I love this book, but it gets the job done in explaining accounting. The one complaint I have is that some of the homework problems have "work backwards" and other things for which there are no examples in the chapters. Other than that I would recommend this book--the explanations it does contain are pretty easy to understand.

A well-designed, informative accounting book that explains the "how" of business transactions affect the company's financial standing using "real world" transactions. As a non-accountant, the traditional accounting cycle is gone from view. Instead, focus is made on the actual business transactions that are generated and their impact. It also discusses the journal entries needed to fix a mistake.
